A man from Greenfield tragically lost his life in a motorcycle-SUV accident on Sunday.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office was notified shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday about a collision between a motorcycle and an SUV at County Road 400 West and US 40, situated between Greenfield and Cumberland. Due to the crash’s severity, deputies requested the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (F.A.C.Team) to respond.
The incident involved a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox SUV.
The Harley Davidson’s rider was declared dead at the scene and has been identified as 53-year-old Eric Edwards from Greenfield. A female passenger, 52-year-old Donna Gross, also from Greenfield, was rushed to IU Methodist Hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover. Neither were wearing helmets at the time.
The driver of the Equinox, 18-year-old Cheyenne Higsby from Greenfield, was unharmed and agreed to undergo toxicology tests due to the crash’s seriousness.
According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the Equinox was heading south on CR 400 West and made a left turn (east) onto US 40, directly into the path of the westbound Harley Davidson. The Equinox had a stop sign, while the Harley Davidson did not. The motorcycle rider had no time to evade the collision and struck the Equinox, resulting in both riders being ejected from the motorcycle.
The investigation remains ongoing. The roadway was briefly closed as the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team conducted their inquiry.
Assistance was provided by officers from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Greenfield Police Department, Fortville Police Department, New Palestine Police Department, Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office, Hancock County Coroner’s Office, and Sugar Creek Township Fire Departments.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office urges all drivers to stay vigilant for motorcycles and encourages all motorcycle riders to wear helmets for their safety.
