Highlighted Features of the HD X 440: The two-wheeler market in India offers various bikes across multiple engine categories. Recently, the 400cc segment has gained traction with numerous manufacturers unveiling new models. In this realm, Harley-Davidson has made its mark through a partnership with Hero MotoCorp, introducing the X 440, which features a 440cc engine combined with modern aesthetics and essential features.
We recently took the Harley-Davidson X 440 for a spin, covering over 400 km in both urban and highway settings. Our evaluation focused on its performance, headlamp brightness, suspension setup, ride comfort, and more.
Here’s a glimpse of our experience with the Harley-Davidson X 440 to assist you in your buying decision:
Performance
The key aspect we assessed was the engine’s performance. The Harley-Davidson X 440 boasts a 440cc single-cylinder, oil-and-air-cooled petrol engine, delivering 27 bhp and 38 Nm of peak torque, mated to a six-speed transmission.
Throughout our ride, the engine’s performance felt satisfactory, offering ample strength. It revved up to 8000-9000 RPM, although noticeable vibrations were felt at higher revs, particularly through the handlebars and footpegs.
However, the engine struggled a bit at lower speeds in higher gears, requiring downshifts to stay within the optimal rev band. Additionally, sudden accelerations and mid-range gear changes revealed a sense of underperformance, suggesting that further power output could enhance the riding experience.
Regarding the gearbox and clutch, we found the transmission to be somewhat stiffer, needing extra effort for smooth gear engagement. Nevertheless, the clutch operation was smooth, thanks to the slipper and assist mechanism, which simplified gear changes in stop-and-go situations.
With front and rear disc brakes featuring dual-channel ABS, the braking performance was commendable.
Ride Quality
Ride quality is another pivotal factor when selecting a new motorcycle. The Harley-Davidson X 440 is outfitted with an upside-down fork at the front and a conventional suspension setup at the rear, offering a softer ride that easily navigates rough roads and potholes.
While the ride remains stable, high-speed travel can be bouncy, and jolts are felt when tackling rough patches aggressively. With a passenger onboard, the comfort level improves, thanks to well-placed grab handles and a soft rear seat.
However, navigating through dense traffic requires caution, as the short wheelbase can hinder confidence when maneuvering.
Features
The Harley-Davidson X 440 comes equipped with a digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth functionality for turn-by-turn navigation, hazard indicators, LED headlights and tail lights, distance-to-empty readings, and more.
Additionally, a USB charger is available for smartphone charging. The display is clear and legible, even in bright sunlight, and showcases various warning indicators with toggle keys on the left for navigating the instrument cluster menus.

Design
The Harley-Davidson X 440 showcases a blend of modern and retro design elements. Its round LED headlamps, DRLs, and indicators are both stylish and functional, providing excellent visibility at night. The attention to detail is apparent with the Harley-Davidson branding integrated into the DRL.
Nonetheless, the headlamp throw could be wider, and the bright LED high beam effectively reduces the intensity of approaching traffic’s beams.
The circular rear-view mirrors provide a clear view of the surroundings, though vibrations can obstruct visibility at higher speeds.
Price
The key question is the pricing. The Denim variant is priced at ₹2.85 lakh (on-road, Noida), while the top-spec S variant costs ₹3.30 lakh (on-road, Noida), positioning it as an underrated choice in its segment.
While engine performance could be enhanced when compared to competitors like the Triumph Speed 400 or the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, the Harley-Davidson X 440 excels in comfort and ride quality. As the first motorcycle from the Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp partnership, we believe improvements could be made regarding vibrations and overall fit and finish.
