A departing superintendent from a Long Island school district was arrested for driving under the influence after severely injuring a motorcyclist in a recent accident, as reported by authorities.
Dr. Michael Hynes, 53, who served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Port Washington Union Free School District, left 63-year-old Alberto Fernandez with significant injuries following the collision that occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday in Sayville, according to Suffolk County Police.
Authorities stated that Hynes was driving his Honda Civic northbound on Railroad Avenue when he attempted to turn left onto Depot Street, colliding with Fernandez, who was traveling south on a Harley-Davidson.
Fernandez, from Sayville, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for the treatment of serious injuries, law enforcement reported.
Meanwhile, Hynes displayed “bloodshot glassy eyes, slurred speech, and an unsteady gait” when apprehended, leading to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, as outlined in a criminal complaint.
This incident marked Hynes’ first offense, and he was released on his own recognizance during his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
In a message to families, the district announced that Dr. Christopher Shields will assume the role of acting superintendent immediately to maintain stability and continuity during this challenging time.
“We promise to keep you updated and will provide further details as they become available,” the district’s statement assured.

Hynes had previously announced his resignation from the position, effective December 13, as reported by Port Washington News .
“A new opportunity has arisen that I have not yet encountered in my public education career,” Hynes remarked to the outlet earlier this month, but did not provide specifics about this new venture.
“I believe this experience will benefit both me and my family.”
Hynes is recognized as a Fulbright Specialist and also holds a position as an associate professor of education and leadership at both Long Island University and Stony Brook University, according to his online biography .
He has appeared in the full-length documentary “Chasing Childhood” and is the author of the book “Staying Grounded: 12 Principles for Transforming School Leader Effectiveness.”
