Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for Over 82,000 Softail Motorcycles: Check the Affected Models

Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for Over 82,000 Softail Motorcycles: Check the Affected Models

play

Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling over 82,000 motorcycles due to a defect that heightens the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The rear shock pre-load adjuster’s mounting tab may break on certain 2018-2024 Softail motorcycles, the federal agency detailed in a recall notice released on June 12, which could cause the rear shock absorber adjuster to damage the rear tire and lead to a loss of tire pressure.

This potential failure poses a risk of crash or serious injury, authorities warn.

As of early June, Harley-Davidson had not reported any fatalities or injuries related to this defect.

Some motorcycles involved in this recall had previously undergone repairs for recall 23V591 and will require a new remedy.

Here’s what to know regarding the recall, including affected years and how to address the issue.

Which Models and Years Are Included in the Recall?

The recall impacts 82,117 Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycles:

 • FLDE: 2018-2019
 • FLHCS: 2018-2024
 • FLHC: 2018-2021
 • FXLRS: 2020-2024
 • FXLRST: 2022-2024
 • FLHCS ANV: 2018, 2023
 • FXRST: 2022

For more details regarding the recall, click here.

What Steps Should Be Taken If My Harley Is Under Recall?

Dealers will provide a new bracket installation at no cost, as per the NHTSA recall notice.

Notification letters are slated to be sent out to owners by June 16.

What Is the Recall Number for Harley?

Owners can reach Harley at 1-800-258-2464 for inquiries. The recall number is 0188.

Additionally, owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Thousands of bikers are anticipated to arrive in Port Dover throughout the day on Friday. With the forecast of sunny weather and temperatures near 20°C, the event could be one of the largest in its history.

The Port Dover event began in 1981 as a simple meetup of 25 motorcycle fans. It has since evolved into one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in Canada.

Meanwhile, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will celebrate its 85th anniversary this August, drawing hundreds of thousands of riders.

Johnson and several other club members have attended Sturgis at least once.

“Sturgis has been a significant event for decades, and we have someone with us who has attended many times,” Johnson shared. “It’s the quintessential gathering for Harley Davidson riders; an epic event.”

According to Johnson, 300,000 to 700,000 bikers might attend that week. The event spans a week, and some arrive during setup, a week earlier, when the crowds are more manageable.

“I’m 66, a fan of AC/DC, and I remember the first day we visited Sturgis, we went to the Full Throttle Saloon, which is enormous,” Johnson recounted. “There were three different bands playing in various areas of the venue.

“I entered and saw an AC/DC tribute band performing, surrounded by many people my age and older having a great time; it was fantastic.”

McLean described Sturgis as an extraordinary experience, highlighting that she had never seen so many motorcycles in her life.

After Friday the 13th, most club members plan to return to Edmonton, but one couple will continue further east to Newfoundland.

“Riding a motorcycle is truly an experience like no other,” Johnson remarked. “All your senses – smell, sound, sight – become heightened, and you become acutely aware of your surroundings.

“It's a feeling of being fully alive, and it’s exhilarating.”

In addition, the club’s stay in Brantford is expected to offer a modest boost to the local economy.

Brantford recently introduced a municipal accommodation tax (MAT) of 4 percent. For instance, if 10 individuals each book a room at $100 per night, the city would collect $4 per room, totaling $40 in revenue for that one-night stay, according to Joe Muto, Brantford’s director of economic development, tourism, and cultural initiatives.

Utilizing the guidelines from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, the overall economic impact of the motorcycle club’s visit to Brantford is estimated to be around $1,100.
