Trudeau Encourages US Consumers to Reflect on the Impact of Trump’s Tariff Threats

Trudeau urges US consumers to consider the harm of Trump's tariff threats

In a statement on Sunday, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada indicated that President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about Canada potentially becoming the “51st state” have diverted focus away from the detrimental effects that significant tariffs would have on U.S. consumers.

Trump has threatened a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada.

“Canada becoming the 51st state isn’t going to happen,” Trudeau mentioned in an MSNBC interview. “Yet, discussions are centered around that, rather than the consequences of a 25% tariff (on) steel and aluminum entering the U.S.”

Trudeau further stated on MSNBC: “No U.S. citizen wants to incur a 25% increase in costs for electricity or oil and gas from Canada, which is a matter that I believe requires greater consideration.”

Trump has claimed that merging Canada with the U.S. would lead to lower taxes and eliminate tariffs.

“I recognize that as a deft negotiator, he enjoys keeping people off balance,” Trudeau remarked regarding Trump’s economic threats aimed at transforming Canada into the 51st state.

Furthermore, Trump has inaccurately referred to the U.S. trade deficit with Canada—a country rich in natural resources that supplies oil and other commodities—as being a subsidy.

Canadian officials have indicated that should Trump proceed with his proposed tariffs, Canada might respond with retaliatory tariffs on American goods such as orange juice, toilets, and certain steel products.

During Trump’s initial term, Canada retaliated against Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum with its own tariffs on U.S.-produced items like bourbon, Harley Davidson motorcycles, and playing cards.

“He was elected to enhance the lives of all Americans and to support American labor,” Trudeau expressed regarding Trump. “These (tariffs) are measures that will ultimately harm them.”

Last week, Trump stated that the U.S. does not rely on Canada for oil or other resources. However, approximately 25% of the daily oil consumption in the U.S. is sourced from Canada. The energy-abundant province of Alberta supplies around 4.3 million barrels of oil to the U.S. each day.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, while the U.S. consumes 20 million barrels of oil daily, it produces approximately 13.2 million barrels per day.

Canada, a founding member of NATO with a population exceeding 40 million, also serves as the leading export market for 36 U.S. states. Around $2.7 billion worth of goods and services cross the border each day.

Trump has mentioned that he might reconsider his tariff threats if Canada improves its security management at the Canada-U.S. border, which he and his advisors view as a potential pathway for undocumented migrants.

Trudeau asserted that less than 1% of illegal migrants and fentanyl come into the U.S. from Canada.

Following a meeting in November at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private property in Florida, Trudeau declared an uptick in funding for border security, showing his willingness to address Trump’s concerns in hopes of appeasing him regarding the tariff threats.

As Trudeau navigates the challenges posed by Trump’s second term and his party’s poor polling, the struggling Canadian prime minister announced his resignation last Monday. He is set to be replaced on March 9, when his Liberal party will select a new leader.

Trudeau highlights the concerns for U.S. consumers regarding Trump's tariff threats

On Sunday, Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned that President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about Canada potentially becoming the “51st state” have diverted focus from the significant impact that high tariffs would have on American consumers.

Trump has proposed to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada.

“The 51st state, that’s not on the table,” Trudeau stated in an MSNBC interview. “Yet, the conversation has shifted from discussing the real effects of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports to entertainment about statehood.”

Trudeau emphasized: “No American citizen wants to see a 25% hike in costs for electricity or oil and gas from Canada. This is an important topic that needs more attention.”

Trump has claimed that should Canada become part of the U.S., taxes would decrease and tariffs would be eliminated.

“I recognize that as a skilled negotiator, he tends to keep people guessing,” Trudeau remarked about Trump’s economic coercion threats aimed at making Canada the 51st state.

Additionally, Trump has inaccurately labeled the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, a resource-rich neighbor supplying the U.S. with commodities such as oil, as a form of subsidy.

Officials in Canada have stated that should Trump enact his proposed tariffs, Canada might retaliate with tariffs on U.S. products like orange juice, toilets, and some types of steel.

During Trump’s first term, in response to tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, Canada imposed its own tariffs on American goods including bourbon, Harley Davidson motorcycles, and playing cards.

“He was elected to make life easier for all Americans and support American workers,” Trudeau said of Trump. “However, these (tariffs) will ultimately harm them.”

Last week, Trump stated that the U.S. doesn’t require oil or any other resources from Canada. However, approximately 25% of the oil the U.S. consumes daily is sourced from Canada, with Alberta exporting 4.3 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicates that the nation consumes about 20 million barrels of oil daily, while producing around 13.2 million barrels.

Canada, as a founding NATO member with a population exceeding 40 million, stands as the leading export market for 36 U.S. states. Every day, nearly $2.7 billion in goods and services are traded across the border.

Trump has expressed that he would reconsider his tariff threats if Canada improved its border security management, which he and his team view as a potential access point for undocumented migrants.

Trudeau asserted that less than 1% of illegal immigrants and fentanyl entering the U.S. are from Canada.

Following a meeting with Trump last November at Mar-a-Lago, the president-elect’s Florida residence, Trudeau announced an intention to boost border security funding, hoping to address Trump’s concerns to dissuade a tariff imposition.

Amid challenges posed by Trump’s upcoming second term and his party’s poor polling numbers, the beleaguered Prime Minister of Canada announced his resignation last Monday. He is expected to be succeeded on March 9, when his Liberal party plans to choose a new leader.

Harley Davidsons Returned to Ex-Bikers Amid Controversial Confiscation Laws

Twins, formerly associated with a biker gang and involved in meth trafficking, had their confiscated Harley Davidson bikes returned after serving their sentences, according to court filings.

The ex-Hells Angels members opted for leniency in asset forfeiture laws, leading to a forfeiture of $75,000 each, while authorities returned their motorcycles and leftover cash from property sales.

Court documents regarding Nuno and Bruno Da Silva were disclosed by the ABC as part of an inquiry into legislation aimed at confiscating profits linked to organized crime.

This was not their first battle over asset confiscation; previously, they grabbed headlines for retrieving $129,000 that police had found in a shopping bag beneath Bruno’s car seat, claiming it was wedding gifts for Nuno.

Post-release, the twins have been spotted participating in poker tournaments at Star’s Brisbane and Gold Coast casinos in 2022.

Star did not provide comments but mentioned ongoing processes for customer monitoring.

The Da Silvas were in the locksmith business in Brisbane, having pleaded guilty in 2015 to trafficking methylamphetamine.

Nuno was sentenced to seven years in prison with possible parole beginning February 2016; Bruno received a nine-year sentence with potential release from October 2017.

A ‘comfortable’ lifestyle

Prosecutors suspected that the Hells Angels supplied drugs to the brothers, who had formally cut ties with the club, and that they sold drugs to street dealers.

In court, prosecutors claimed that the brothers threatened individuals when collecting debts.

One threatening text from Bruno allegedly said, “Junkie, I swear on my mum, I’m going to put a bullet in your leg.”

Following their arrests in October 2013, authorities seized assets including proceeds from home sales, motorcycles, and a distinctive winged skull ring.

Their way of living was described as comfortable, but not extravagant during their sentencing.

Eight years post-incident, each forfeited $75,000, as the ABC reports.

This amount accounted for over half of the remaining cash from property sales, but did not include their motorcycles.

Bruno contended that the motorcycle was to be his only transportation after his release, asserting that its purchase price of $26,495 did not come from illegitimate means.

He argued that confiscation of home sale proceeds would financially cripple him.

Nuno informed the court that he bought his Harley for $27,300 through legitimate sources, part of which came from a former locksmith employee who had also pleaded guilty to drug offenses.

Nuno emphasized that prosecutors failed to establish any financial gains from their crimes.

He insisted their locksmith business, which frequently dealt with cash for call-out work, was quite profitable, and he occasionally lent money, albeit with inconsistent record-keeping of the loans.

More than $150,000 found in shopping bags

The Crime and Corruption Commission proposed reforms to the confiscation laws last year, while new Attorney-General Deb Frecklington indicated she would consider possible amendments.

Experts have expressed concerns that such laws may overlook major criminals, assess some provisions as unfair, and questioned the regulators’ risk appetite regarding confiscation efforts.

Other instances of discrepancies between the perception and reality of confiscation laws include ABC’s investigation, featuring the case of Ivan Tesic, who was imprisoned in 2019 for possessing 3.6 kilograms of methamphetamine.

A man in a black shirt and cap poses with a woman in front of the Sydney skyline.

Tesic was convicted in 2002 in NSW for involvement in drug supply and later in Queensland in 2019 for possessing over 3 kilograms of meth hidden in soft drink containers. (Supplied)

Authorities initially pursued Tesic’s assets, including three properties worth over $800,000 and a vintage 1969 Monaro.

In the end, Tesic lost $73,923 as unexplained wealth.

In a separate case, investigators executed a raid on an apartment housing a former biker and his partner, uncovering $158,000 cash in plastic bags, firearms, methamphetamine, pipes, knuckle dusters, and scales.

Five years later, the cash confiscation turned around after a friend of the man claimed that the money belonged to her from a compensation payout due to an accident at an engagement party in 2008.

The woman testified that to safeguard her payout cash from potential harm due to domestic violence, she entrusted the man with portions of her cash wrapped in envelopes.

Even though prosecutors described her account as “inherently improbable,” the court deemed her a credible witness, supported by records of her cash withdrawals.

The court also concluded that it was unlikely the cash stemmed from drug-related activities, particularly after the man testified about heavy substance use and no evidence pointed to drug sales.

Solo Adventure to Goa from Bangalore on My Harley-Davidson X440

By 2024, I had finally gained more confidence in my bike and my handling abilities. After applying for a week of leave, I began planning a solo ride set for November 2024.

BHPian HDx440Life recently shared this with fellow enthusiasts:

I typically reserve my leaves for the close of the year and have long dreamed of embarking on a coastal bike adventure. I purchased the Harley Davidson X440 at the end of 2023, but fear of the unknown held me back from riding that year. Fast forward to 2024, I felt much more confident with my bike and my skills. I applied for a week’s leave and started mapping out a solo journey for November 2024.

Deciding on the route was next, and I decided on Bangalore – Chikmangaluru – Gokarna – Goa – Davanagere – Bangalore. I intentionally planned for a short first day as it had been a while since I’d taken a long ride; I wanted to ease my body into it. Here’s the route I settled on:

The next step was organizing my accommodation during the ride. I wanted this trip to be memorable, so I booked an Airbnb in Chikmangaluru and a hostel in Gokarna! It would be my first hostel experience, and I was excited, especially since it was a mixed dorm accommodating 8 guests! My plan included staying one night each in Chikmangaluru, Gokarna, and Davanagere, plus four nights in Goa on my return journey.

With everything set, I focused on acquiring the necessary gear. I purchased a GUARDIANGEARS Wolverine Magnetic Tank Pouch with Rain Cover, a GUARDIANGEARS Rhino Mini 50L Tail Bag with Rain Cover, and some bamboo socks to avoid the pesky issue of smelly feet. I already owned clan riding boots, Fly Butane Pants, Fly Terra Trek II Jacket, and Cramster waterproof gloves. However, I noticed that all the armor had developed dry rot—similar to my old Alpinestar shoes—so I bought Knox CE level 2 elbow and shoulder armors (set of 4) and a Royal Enfield Ergo Pro-Tech shoulder protector in yellow. They fit my gear perfectly and the quality is impressive.

The night before my ride arrived, and I packed up my belongings. The next day, I attached my tailbag to the bike and slipped into my riding gear. Here’s a picture of the bike all prepped for the journey:

The initial part of the ride was quite uneventful; the roads were smooth, and I maintained a steady speed (70-80 km/h) until I reached the Airbnb in Chikmangaluru. The accommodation was beautiful and just as described. After a light lunch, I took out my DJI drone for some aerial shots and videos. Below is an image of the location:

Check out this drone shot of my stay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eLnFzMkmRU

I woke up early the following day and began my ride around 7 am. The roads were splendid, and I arrived in Gokarna by 1 pm. Riding through the winding mountain roads was a thrill, and I eagerly anticipated my hostel stay. The room exceeded my expectations, as shown in the picture below.

Here’s an Insta 360 X3 video of my ride through the jungle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAlkG7iZo6M

Here’s a glimpse of my hostel room, which I shared with another guy and three girls:

Saying I had fun in Gokarna would be an understatement. I visited the main beach, Paradise Beach, and Om Beach, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. I created a short video compilation of my drone footage from there:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ9k9QelXEQ

My roommates (the girls) woke up early the next morning (around 4 am), prompting me to rise as well. I was busy until 5:30 and then set off for Om Beach to catch the sunrise—a breathtaking sight you should not miss if you ever visit Gokarna.

After returning to my hotel by 7 am, I got ready and departed for Goa by 8 am. The roads were incredibly smooth, and I enjoyed the scenery with the sea on my left and a river on my right. Here’s a drone shot of the area:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtI5br3ENIE

I continued my journey until I reached the end of the road, both literally and figuratively—as you can see in the picture below:

Google Maps directed me to a narrow road with no chance to turn back, leading directly to the sea! After a bit of shock, I pondered my next step. Thankfully, a local cyclist informed me that I’d need to take a boat across the sea! Below is a picture of the route and my bike loading onto the boat:

After finally reaching Goa, I checked into a boutique hotel I had booked and then headed to the airport. By the way, my wife had also expressed a desire to visit Goa, so I arranged a flight for her and our 5-year-old. Here are a couple of photos from Goa, in case you’re tired of looking at too many Goa pictures:

Once my time in Goa wrapped up, my family flew back home as I headed towards Davanagere. On the way, I had an interesting experience when Google led me off the highway and into a reserved forest area. The road was primarily in good condition, but I didn’t encounter any vehicles apart from my bike. Stopping to take a photo in the jungle felt carefree. Take a look at the picture below:

I continued my ride, only to come across a warning sign stating not to stop because cheetahs inhabit the area! Nonetheless, I moved forward and stayed in a decent hotel that night. The ride back to Bangalore the next day was smooth, and I felt delighted to have finally completed a journey I will cherish for the rest of my life! I’m already looking forward to my next adventure ride this year.

10 Quick Used Cruiser Bikes You Can Purchase for Under $10,000

For many years, a cruiser was typically defined as a motorcycle that prioritized aesthetics over utility, emphasizing relaxed ergonomics at the expense of performance. Paradoxically, these motorcycles evolved into models that often sacrificed true comfort while indulging in excessive chrome detailing. Over time, however, performance began to take a more prominent role.

Today’s cruisers boast unprecedented power levels, but that increased capability comes with trade-offs. Maneuvering these hefty bikes demands significant torque, which can be costly. For budget-conscious buyers aiming for a $10k limit, the used market is the way to go. By the early 2000s, muscle cruisers became popular, and many from that era are now available at reasonable prices.

To provide you with the most current and precise information, this article draws on various official manufacturer websites and other reputable sources, including brand-specific sites. Purchasing a used motorcycle inherently carries risks, so it’s vital to conduct thorough research and approach the process with care. The motorcycles on this list are assessed based on our established methodologies that focus on power.

Last Chance to Visit Iconic Harley-Davidson Site Before Ownership Change Leaves Fans ‘Shocked and Heartbroken’

A DEARLY CHERISHED Harley-Davidson dealership that has been in operation for 75 years is about to undergo significant changes in just a few days.

The family behind the Historic Harley-Davidson in Kansas has just four days left managing the business before it officially hands over ownership.

On January 4, Mike Patterson, the dealership’s owner in Topeka, shared the unfortunate news with supporters on social media.

This year marked an impressive milestone of 75 years under the Patterson name, but after reaching this remarkable achievement, the family felt it was time to pursue new opportunities.

“It has been a journey filled with dedication, hard work, and countless memories,” Patterson expressed in his heartfelt message.

“After considerable thought and contemplation, I’ve decided to sell Historic Harley-Davidson.”

Patterson’s grandfather established the store in 1949, and since then, four generations have nurtured a thriving community of Harley enthusiasts.

“It’s been a hub, a gathering place, and a haven for those who share a passion for the open road,” said Patterson.

“Every customer, each handshake, and all the shared stories over the years have been invaluable to us.

“You’ve all become an extension of our family, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”

Steven Towers, who owns other dealerships in North Carolina and Nebraska, will assume leadership of the store on January 14.

Patterson mentioned that all employees currently under him will be offered positions by Towers.

The beloved owner encouraged fans to help welcome Towers as he carries on the legacy established by four generations of the Patterson family.

Nonetheless, some fans are not ready to say goodbye to the Patterson family.

“I’m stunned and saddened by this announcement,” wrote one loyal customer.

Harley-Davidson Closures in 2024

There are more than 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships across the United States.

However, numerous stores have closed for various reasons throughout 2024 – some without any explanation.

Here are a few Harley-Davidson locations that have shut down this year and the reasons behind their closures:

The San Francisco location closed its doors in June after a remarkable 110 years due to ‘chaos’ caused by new management.

Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, closed in September without any explanation provided.

Harley-Davidson’s historic location in New York City ceased operations on September 28, with the owner mentioning economic challenges.

Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, closed in October after the owners transferred ownership to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.

Additionally, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, is temporarily closing for the winter from November 2 until April 1, 2024.

“I don’t have the words to express my feelings. I am grateful for all the memories and opportunities provided by the Patterson family.”

Another Harley enthusiast described the dealership as the best in the area.

“Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors. It has truly been a pleasure knowing you as not just a loyal customer but as a friend,” commented a heartbroken motorcycle rider.

Another fan of motorbikes expressed that they will fondly remember Patterson’s shop as a great place to “visit and hang out.”

“You’ve cultivated a fantastic community. I wish you all the best in your next chapter,” added the rider.

Many other customers extended their best wishes to the Patterson family and expressed their eagerness to support Towers during his ownership.

Two additional Harley shops are changing ownership, leaving fans in a state of uncertainty.
