Mother Recalls Christmas Nightmare as Son Struggled to Breathe and His Lips Turned Blue Last Year

On the last Christmas Eve, 8-year-old Jacobe Cook caused his parents quite a fright when he started having difficulty breathing and his lips turned blue.

Jacobe had begun to feel unwell the day before and has a history of pneumonia. However, this year’s Christmas 2023 was particularly traumatic for his family as his condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating a trip to the Freeman Hospital.

Mum, Sarah Roberts, first took him to an urgent care center, then to North Tees Hospital. Initially, the medical staff suspected he had a stomach bug and sent him home, instructing his parents to monitor his condition closely. Sarah and dad Gary did just that, but on Christmas Eve, things took a turn for the worse.

Sarah recounted, “Jacobe was up all night being sick, maintaining a high temperature and complaining of pain in his shoulders and back. By the next morning, on Christmas Eve, he struggled to breathe.”

“We quickly took him back to urgent care and, while we were waiting, his condition worsened significantly. He was working hard to breathe; his lips had turned blue, and his arms and hands were turning purple. He was immediately seen by a doctor who administered oxygen and suspected he might be septic.”

An ambulance quickly transported us back to North Tees Hospital, where Jacobe underwent numerous assessments to rule out meningitis or any infection. An x-ray revealed that he was suffering from severe pneumonia in his left lung, leading to him being kept on oxygen and started on antibiotics.

At this point, Sarah noted that her son was “really poorly,” and they faced a nerve-wracking Christmas Day when a doctor informed them that Jacobe was in serious condition and had fluid in his lungs. She explained, “Hearing that was extremely worrying and frightening for us. A scan was needed to confirm the fluid, but it couldn’t be done until Boxing Day due to the reduced staff.”

The scan confirmed the presence of fluid, but the type was uncertain, prompting a transfer to Freeman Hospital for specialized care. Sarah shared, “We arrived on December 28 and suddenly realized we were an hour away from home, our son was critically ill in hospital, and we had nowhere to stay.”

They stayed at the hospital that first night, and as they tried to figure out their accommodations, the nurses informed them about Scott House, a ‘Home from Home’ that provides accommodation for families with hospitalized children.

Scott House, run by the charity Sick Children’s Trust, offers families a place to stay during their child’s hospitalization. Sarah described it as “an absolute lifesaver.” It provided everything they needed and kept them just minutes away from Jacobe.

“I was determined to stay at the hospital regardless, since I couldn’t be away from Jacobe. The limited space in the wards meant Gary could be with us and then return to Scott House for some rest. Without it, our only option would have been to sleep in the waiting rooms. We couldn’t afford a hotel, especially not knowing how long Jacobe would be in the hospital,” she said.

With everything transpiring during Christmas, Sarah noted, “It made everything feel much more challenging. Traditionally, it’s a joyful time, but to us, it felt like everything had come to a standstill. The hospital had Christmas decorations, and staff kindly gifted Jacobe presents, which was wonderful. However, his illness made us hesitant to celebrate.”

Due to Jacobe’s condition, she explained, “Our lives were essentially paused. The presents under the tree at home remained wrapped, and we didn’t see any family.” She continued, “In reality, Christmas took a back seat for us. We were entirely focused on his recovery.”

Over the following days and into the New Year, the NHS staff worked to drain the fluid from Jacob’s chest. By January 4, it became evident that surgery was required to remove an “empyema,” a pus-filled sac that had caused his lung to collapse.

Thankfully, Jacobe recovered and was discharged on January 12. Sarah commented on her son’s progress since then, stating, “Jacobe has had a few episodes of pneumonia since, but each was managed successfully with antibiotics.”

“Now he’s doing so much better, full of energy, and back to his usual self. He’s looking forward to Christmas, and we can’t wait to have a big roast dinner and spend quality time together as a family, relaxing and playing,” she expressed.

“We will always be thankful to The Sick Children’s Trust for their amazing support at Scott House. If you’re able to contribute to their Christmas appeal, please consider doing so – your donation will mean a great deal to families trying to remain close to their seriously ill children, just as we did.”

IPCA: Police Should Have Avoided Pursuit of Speeding Motorcyclist Prior to Fatal Crash

IPCA: Police Should Have Avoided Pursuit of Speeding Motorcyclist Prior to Fatal Crash

The pursuit was abandoned, but shortly after, the motorcycle crashed head-on with an oncoming vehicle, as reported by the IPCA.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has determined that law enforcement should not have pursued a speeding motorcyclist in Whakatāne before it resulted in a fatal accident.

An officer detected the Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling at 115 km/h in a 60 km/h zone shortly before 6 PM on March 16 this year.

When the motorcyclist failed to stop as directed, continuing on State Highway 30 towards Awakeri, the officer initiated a pursuit with lights and sirens, reaching speeds between 140 and 160 km/h.

After 5 km, the pursuit was called off; however, just a kilometer later, the motorcycle attempted to overtake a car on a curve and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.

The police oversight body found that while the officer was justified in signaling for the motorcyclist to stop, they did not adequately adhere to the policy regarding pursuing fleeing drivers by commencing the chase.

The report indicated that the officer should have refrained from pursuing the motorcycle, especially considering the dangers associated with high-speed chases, and should have terminated the pursuit sooner.

The authority refrained from concluding that the officer’s actions caused the motorcyclist’s death. “Based on the evidence available, the authority could not determine that the officer’s actions led to the motorcyclist’s fatal crash.”

Since the existing policy on fleeing drivers does not explicitly address motorcycles prior to initiating a chase, the authority recommended it be revised to emphasize the risks inherent in pursuing a motorcycle and stated that such actions should only be undertaken in “the most extreme circumstances.”

The police acknowledged the authority’s findings.

Superintendent Tim Anderson, the Bay of Plenty district commander, conveyed his sympathies to the deceased man’s family, asserting that the officer made a sound decision by attempting to stop the motorcycle and was striving to perform their duties effectively.

“The officer signaled for the motorcyclist to halt due to the excessive speed, which posed a significant risk not only to the rider but to all law-abiding road users,” Anderson explained.

“The officer acted correctly in this situation and was justified in attempting to halt the motorcyclist, who was traveling at nearly twice the speed limit when first observed by the officer.”

Superintendent Steven Greally, Director of Road Policing, stated that the recommendations concerning the fleeing driver policy would be taken into account during its next revision.

KR Ravindran Recognized for DEI Contributions by IFC/WIM

KR Ravindran Recognized for DEI Contributions by IFC/WIMK R Ravindran, one of Sri Lanka’s esteemed business figures and the only Sri Lankan to serve as Rotary International President from Chicago, USA, was honored as one of the Top 10 Diversity Champions by WIM/IFC (a member of the World Bank) for his contributions to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within Rotary and his workplace.

Nearly 40 years ago, Ravindran co-founded Printcare Plc with the late Merrill J Fernando. Printcare has evolved into one of South Asia’s most respected diversified printing and packaging enterprises, operating multiple manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka, India, and Africa. The company is also well-recognized as a preferred employer in the industry, strongly advocating for DEI, implementing various worker-friendly initiatives, employing individuals with physical and mental challenges, and actively engaging with local schools and communities around its facilities.

“For example, in the US, major companies like Walmart, John Deere, Ford, and Harley Davidson have recently scaled back or paused their DEI efforts, citing financial challenges and prevailing political climates. In contrast, businesses in Sri Lanka are unwavering in their resolve to cultivate an authentically respectful workplace, where each individual feels valued, heard, and empowered, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength,” noted KR Ravindran, who has also been featured on the cover of the internationally circulated printing magazine Heidelberg News.

Ravindran holds the distinction of being the first Sri Lankan and the 11th Asian to lead Rotary International, based in Chicago. Following this, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the $3 billion Rotary Foundation. He played a crucial role in establishing the National Cancer Detection Center and continues to serve as its ambassador, particularly in connecting investors and stakeholders. The center has offered free screenings to over 100,000 women and is now expanding its efforts to include cervical cancer screenings. Sri Lanka aims to be the first nation in the world to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, he spearheaded a Rotary initiative in Sri Lanka to enhance MRI capabilities. During the recent economic downturn, he successfully urged the Rotary International Board to permit a one-time exemption allowing the use of the Rotary brand in a unique partnership with UNICEF.

Occasionally, Santa Claus enlists a team of motorcycle riders to bring festive joy.

This year, the festivities began early at Children’s Hospital Colorado located at Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, where thousands of Harley-Davidson riders gathered to donate numerous toys on Sunday morning and early afternoon.

A Grand Display of Support

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts took part in the 39th annual Harley Toy Run at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colorado.

Organized by Mile High Harley, the event featured local bikers, including first responders, bringing toys to donate.

“Every single person on two wheels brought at least one toy to donate,” remarked Blayke Roznowski, a representative for Children’s Hospital Colorado.

These toys will be managed by the hospital’s child life specialist team program for the young patients.

The contributions aim to lift the spirits of hospitalized children, providing them with a touch of holiday joy and a welcome distraction from treatment.

Bikers Rally for a Cause

Harley riders, often misjudged, actively participated in the event, showcasing their generosity and community camaraderie.

Janet Cook, a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and organizer, highlighted the event’s purpose as a means to give back to the community, particularly during the holiday season.

“It’s about witnessing the smiles and seeing all the kids lined up; it’s just wonderful,” Cook expressed.

Leeta Davis, another rider, emphasized the significance of the toy drive, stating, “it really is the best of the best.”

The toy run serves as a joyful occasion for bikers to contribute and express their appreciation for their community.

Healing Through Toys

Each rider contributes at least one toy, with many bringing entire bags, resulting in thousands of toys being collected.

These generous donations will ensure that thousands of toys reach Children’s Colorado patients across all campuses throughout the year.

“This remarkably kind donation makes it possible to provide thousands of toys to our patients,” Roznowski stated. “We are incredibly thankful.”

Rick and Janice Noyes will continue to own and operate New River Harley-Davidson in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

“About five years ago, I met with Rick and Janice Noyes at the last Harley-Davidson dealer show in Milwaukee to explore the possibility of selling two of their North Carolina stores,” explains Chaconas. “Post-pandemic, Rick reached out to discuss selling their dealerships again. Shortly thereafter, my partner, Courtney Bernhard, and I visited them to assist in preparing for the sale.

“After assessing the value and creating a marketing strategy, we matched them with a unique and qualified buyer, the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships,” he adds. “It was an honor to help Rick and Janice successfully sell their dealerships, facilitating their transition to semi-retirement and allowing them to focus on their remaining store.
