Rolling Thunder Riders Pay Tribute to Veterans and MIA with Memorial Day Ride

THIS YEAR, EVENTS ARE SET TO TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER. THIS WEEKEND, MILLIONS OF FLAGS ARE WAVING ACROSS THE NATION TO HONOR THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO FOUGHT AND GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE FREEDOMS WE ENJOY DAILY. ON THE GULF COAST, CEREMONIES AND EVENTS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING ALL WEEKEND, INCLUDING ONE THAT CONTINUES TO GROW. MADISON ZALESKI IS IN GORDA TONIGHT, WHERE SHE MET WITH ROLLING THUNDER OF FLORIDA AS THEY HELD THEIR THUNDER RIDE FOR FREEDOM. >> A ROLL OF THUNDER CAN BE A DISTURBING SOUND, BUT IN THIS CASE, IT REPRESENTS SUPPORT FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM. MEMBERS OF ROLLING THUNDER, AN ADVOCACY GROUP FOR PRISONERS OF WAR AND THOSE MISSING IN ACTION, CAME TOGETHER ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO THANK ALL WHO HAVE SERVED AND SACRIFICED. >> “I HAVE A MISSING COUSIN, AND THAT’S THE FOCUS OF ROLLING THUNDER, ALONG WITH HELPING VETERANS IN NEED.” >> ROLLING THUNDER WAS FOUNDED 37 YEARS AGO AS A PROTEST IN WASHINGTON, D.C., AIMING TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE MILITARY AND REMIND CONGRESS. >> “IT APPEARS THERE IS AN INCREDIBLE NEED FOR THOSE WHO ARE MISSING TO COME HOME FIRST,” ED SAID. OVER 1,200 BIKES, INCLUDING 300 BIKERS, RODE FROM LASHLEY PARK IN GORDA TO BERT’S BLACK WIDOW HARLEY-DAVIDSON ON SUNDAY MORNING. RIDERS HOPE THIS WILL ONE DAY PROVIDE RELIEF TO FAMILIES OF THE FALLEN. 82,000 STILL REMAIN MISSING IN ACTION SINCE WORLD WAR I. >> “ONE OF THE MAIN EVENTS WE DO IS TO SUPPORT GROUPS GOING BACK IN COUNTRY TO NORTH AFRICA, EUROPE, AND SOUTHEAST ASIA TO LOCATE REMAINS, CONDUCT DNA TESTING, AND BRING THEM HOME.”

Rolling Thunder riders honor veterans and MIA with Memorial Day ride

Over 300 bikers and members of Rolling Thunder rode from Laishley Park in Punta Gorda to Bert’s Black Widow Harley-Davidson on Sunday morning.

A roll of thunder can be a frightening sound, but it signifies support for those who served and sacrificed. Members of Rolling Thunder, an advocacy group for prisoners of war and those missing in action, gathered for Memorial Day weekend to express gratitude to all veterans. Dr. Lance Armstrong stated, “Because I have a missing cousin, that’s the focus of Rolling Thunder, along with helping veterans in need.” Founded 37 years ago as a protest ride in Washington D.C., Rolling Thunder aims to show support for the military. “To remind Congress, P.O.W.s and M.I.A.s must come home first,” remarked Carl Steinhoff, chairman of Rolling Thunder, Chapter 5. More than 300 bikers rode from Laishley Park in Punta Gorda to Bert’s Black Widow Harley-Davidson on Sunday morning. Riders hope this effort will one day bring relief to families of the fallen.

“Currently, we have 82,000 still missing in action since World War I. Rolling Thunder is one of the key events we do to support groups traveling back to countries like North Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia to locate remains, conduct DNA testing, and reunite them with their families,” Steinhoff explained.

Armed Forces Day: Honoring Our Service Members | News

Armed Forces Day: Remembering Those Who Served

On May 17, we commemorated Armed Forces Day.

This day serves as a reminder to honor the brave individuals from America’s Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

In our community, Harley Davidson of Utica held its traditional ceremony to commemorate those who have served.

The family-friendly event was complimentary and accessible to everyone, featuring a color presentation by the Notre Dame NJROTC Color Guard, alongside a 21-gun salute and trumpet taps from the New Hartford American Legion Post.

One veteran from Vietnam, affectionately known as “Wild Bill,” expressed appreciation for being remembered.

He reflected, “When I returned from Vietnam in the ’60s, we were advised to discard our uniforms and blend in with civilians, told to hide our military service. That experience was painful. Nowadays, there’s so much warmth and support for us veterans. I truly cherish that.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all members of the Armed Forces for your service.

On May 17, we celebrated Armed Forces Day.

A Unique Day on Multiple Fronts!

Earlier this month, I had intended to do some bike riding when an old army colleague mentioned that his motorcycle ministry group was heading to Leesburg, Fla., for the 2025 Leesburg Bikefest. This piqued my interest, and he extended an invitation to join them on their ride.

The plan involved the ministry members riding from Inverness, stopping at Gator Harley Davidson in east Leesburg, and following a Sunday service led by a biker chaplain before cruising into town to enjoy the second half of the “Bikefest” experience.

I shared with my friend, Mr. Dennis Mills, that I no longer owned a Harley, having sold it after my wife suffered a burn on her leg from an exhaust pipe. I now ride a Suzuki “AN 650” (Burgman) scooter instead.

He shared some essential details about the day’s events. The ministry group, known as “Servants of Christ,” originated in Derby, Connecticut, and consisted of devoted, humble individuals. He also mentioned that their ministry included various brands of motorcycles, not just Harleys.

It’s worth noting that they prefer to be called a Christian Motorcycle Ministry rather than a club. Additionally, since I would miss attending church with my family, there would be a preacher speaking under a large pavilion at the Harley dealership.

We discussed meeting at the Harley grounds, and just as I was exiting I-75 at the Wildwood exit, I spotted his group passing by. I knew then that it was going to be a fantastic day!

This was my first time riding with a group of bikers without feeling judged for not having the “right” bike. We arrived at Gator HD’s parking lot around 9:15. As the event was just kicking off, we were among the first 100 bikes parked—what a nice start!

Aside from the numerous Harleys already parked, I noticed a variety of other brands as well. This was reassuring; many riders might feel intimidated about bringing an off-brand bike to a large gathering like this or Daytona Bike Week. Now, they could feel at home and enjoy the event comfortably.

Times have shifted, and in my view, the demographics of the riders attending the Leesburg Bikefest have also transformed. I was surprised to encounter so many veterans at the initial venue. We met several ex-paratroopers, including one who had worked at the same heavy parachute facility at Fort Bragg, N.C., just two years after I had served there—he likely operated the same rugged forklifts I spent countless hours on!

The Servants of Christ group displayed their “colors”—indicated by patches on their vests, which were quite impressive. After listening to the preacher, browsing sales booths, and sampling delicious food, we returned to the rows of parked bikes, mounted up, and proceeded to our next destination.

Upon parking at our second location, we convened for their official monthly meeting beneath a large oak tree, just north of the main attraction. Here, I truly began to appreciate the members of their group. They commenced the meeting with a prayer and passed around a hat for donations to support one of the charities they sponsor. It wasn’t long before I decided to share their story in the paper and join their ranks.

In conclusion, I never anticipated wanting to join a motorcycle club, yet life has a way of bringing forth unexpected opportunities. Reflecting on past experiences reminds me of the adage: “NEVER SAY NEVER!”

I hope you all have a blessed week until we meet again!
