Holiday Campaign Generates $484,000 for Central Okanagan Food Bank – Kelowna News

One generous extended family chose to donate their Christmas funds. Black Mountain Elementary and Harley Davidson each managed to gather about 2,000 pounds of food.

These instances are just a glimpse of how the community united to significantly support the Central Okanagan Food Bank towards the close of 2024.

The COFB reported that its Set the Holiday Table campaign brought in over $484,000 in December, making it possible for thousands of local families to access healthy meals throughout the holiday season and into the new year.

“As we embrace the new year and persist in our efforts to nourish our community, we are incredibly thankful for the strong support shown by everyone who engaged with us during the holidays,” shared Trina Speiser, director of development at COFB.

“Food insecurity affects many throughout the year, and we are immensely grateful for the backing we receive from individuals and organizations in Kelowna, West Kelowna, and beyond to help us provide healthy food and resources to those in need.”

The generosity transcended the Set the Holiday Table campaign, with individuals contributing financially, organizing food drives, and volunteering their time to help ensure that no one goes hungry in the Central Okanagan.

“Among the numerous inspiring stories from the holiday season are community food drives that exceeded expectations. Black Mountain Elementary and Harley Davidson each gathered around 2,000 pounds of essential food for families. Additionally, West Kelowna Fire Rescue’s food drive amassed nearly 15,000 pounds of food, with donations valued at over $50,000.

“Olympic Dairy made a vital contribution to youth nutrition by donating 181 cases of yogurt, directly aiding our Snack Pack program and ensuring children have access to healthy snacks during the holidays,” COFB explained in a news release.

One extended family even encouraged 12 young children and grandchildren to contribute their Christmas money, making it an annual tradition to give back.

Though the holiday season has passed, the demand remains notably high at the COFB. Donations typically decline in the early part of the year, so residents of the Central Okanagan are urged to continue their food drives, financial donations, and volunteer efforts.

“Every gesture, regardless of its size, plays a crucial role in nourishing our community and instilling hope in the Central Okanagan.”
