The Cox family has been at the helm of the Rock Hill shop in South Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, since 1961.

However, motorbike enthusiast Carson Baker, a prominent figure in the automotive sector, finalized the purchase this past week.

Now, Jan Cox, one of the co-owners, looks forward to retirement and hopes that Baker will achieve the same level of success her family had.

“We had a remarkable journey serving riders from York County, Charlotte, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and beyond,” Cox shared with PowerSports Business.

“We genuinely hope that the new owner receives the same warm welcome as we did while continuing this service.”

Cox expressed heartfelt gratitude to their customers and is eager to keep tabs on the family’s additional store in Asheboro, North Carolina.

“The loyalty and commitment you have shown us are deeply appreciated,” she noted.

“We are excited about what lies ahead for our Asheboro location.”

Recil Cox, the founder of the family enterprise, initially juggled his day job at a textile mill to keep the business afloat.

Once the Harley dealership began to turn a profit, Recil was able to devote himself to his passion project full-time.

“Finding three generations of family business ownership is rare these days,” remarked Stephen Cox, who manages the family’s second location in Asheboro.

“The unparalleled customer loyalty and a dedicated team that upholds both the Cox name and Harley-Davidson’s legacy are truly special.”

Baker has since rebranded the store as Dog House Harley-Davidson of Rock Hill and included it in his expanding dealership collection.

The new owner emphasized his passion for automotive sales and his drive to keep growing.

“We’re actively seeking more locations and are working on new deals,” he informed PowerSports Business in January.

“I live and breathe this industry. I work seven days a week, and I’m passionate about it.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team.”

Harley-Davidson closures in 2024

There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships nationwide.

However, several stores have shut down for various reasons in 2024, often with little to no explanation.

Below is a list of some Harley-Davidson locations that have closed this year and the reasons, if any, cited for their closures:

The San Francisco location closed its doors in June after 110 years due to ‘chaos’ caused by new management.

Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, shut down in September without providing any reason.

Harley-Davidson’s historic location in New York City closed on September 28, with the owner referencing economic challenges.

Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, ceased operations in October after the owners sold the business to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.

Additionally, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, is temporarily closing for the season from November 2 until April 1, 2024.

Some Harley-Davidson shops are permanently closing, a trend that enthusiasts claim poses problems for bikers.

Other fans have celebrated following the release of new branded car accessories.

Additionally, there are opportunities for Harley fans to secure assistance in purchasing their dream motorcycle.

Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealerships Acquired by Dealer Group

Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson, located in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte, North Carolina, have transitioned ownership from Rick and Janice Noyes to Charlie Cole, Will Cole, and Freddy Tedesco of the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships.

For 30 years, Rick and Janice Noyes have proudly owned and operated Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson and its sister store, Beach House Harley-Davidson, situated along U.S. Route 17. “Creating a thriving business that serves as a community fixture for over three decades is no small accomplishment,” remarks Rick Noyes. “Selling such a well-established business is another emotional journey altogether. It requires a unique set of expertise to ensure that the sale successfully comes to light. George [Chaconas] and his committed team leave no stone unturned and stay involved until the deal is finalized.”

In the past five years, Performance Brokerage Services has facilitated the sale of over 300 dealerships, establishing itself as the leading dealership brokerage firm in North America. George C. Chaconas, Senior Partner, and Courtney A. Bernhard, Partner of the Harley-Davidson & Powersports Division at Performance Brokerage Services, acted as the exclusive sell-side advisors for this transaction.

Rick and Janice Noyes will continue to own and operate New River Harley-Davidson in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

“About five years ago, I met with Rick and Janice Noyes at the last Harley-Davidson dealer show in Milwaukee to explore the possibility of selling two of their North Carolina stores,” explains Chaconas. “Post-pandemic, Rick reached out to discuss selling their dealerships again. Shortly thereafter, my partner, Courtney Bernhard, and I visited them to assist in preparing for the sale.

“After assessing the value and creating a marketing strategy, we matched them with a unique and qualified buyer, the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships,” he adds. “It was an honor to help Rick and Janice successfully sell their dealerships, facilitating their transition to semi-retirement and allowing them to focus on their remaining store. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to exclusively represent them through this significant life change.”

Charlie Cole, President of the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships, has a history of excellence as a Harley-Davidson dealer since 1998. “I want to extend my gratitude to Courtney and George at Performance Brokerage Services for presenting me with this remarkable opportunity,” he states. “This marks the acquisition of my third and fourth stores through PBS.”

With the addition of Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson and Beach House Harley-Davidson, the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships has expanded its reach to eight dealership locations across Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Rick and Janice Noyes were represented by Logan Parker and Greg May from Bass Sox Mercer in Tallahassee, Florida, while the Cole Family of Harley-Davidson Dealerships was represented by Eric Gregory at Gregory Law, LLC in Johns Creek, Georgia.

Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson will be renamed Shipwreck Harley-Davidson and will continue operations at its existing site at 6620 Market Street in Wilmington, North Carolina. Similarly, Beach House Harley-Davidson will be rebranded as Sea Breeze Harley-Davidson and will remain at 100 Harley Davidson Drive in Shallotte, North Carolina.

The Chautauqua-Kinzua Harley Owners Group (C-K HOG), which is based at Jamestown Harley Davidson, recently made a generous contribution to the Chautauqua County Little Free Project. This donation included a variety of non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, and other essentials for their pantry, as well as a significant number of toys for their Christmas program, all aimed at assisting local individuals and families in need.

The Little Free Project was initiated in 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, by Beth Anderson and her children, Lily and Richard III Speadling, who were seeking ways to support their community. Initially starting with one pantry filled with donated goods, the initiative has now expanded to include 40 pantries in the surrounding area. Although the pantries may be small, they symbolize hope for those who utilize them. C-K HOG has been a strong supporter of the family’s ongoing efforts to aid the community, frequently donating throughout the year and collecting toys at each meeting for Christmas donations.

For those interested in contributing to the welfare of those less fortunate in our area, the Chautauqua County Little Free Project maintains a Facebook page.
