Video: SUV Crashes into Kalamazoo Gas Station, Leaving Several Injured

KALAMAZOO, MI — On a typical sunny afternoon, motorcyclists gathered at a gas station in Kalamazoo, preparing to get back on their bikes.

In a matter of moments, the calm atmosphere was shattered. An SUV surged through the crowd, vehicles, and a gas pump, causing chaos on Wednesday, March 19, at 3908 S. Westnedge Ave.

Initially, seven individuals were reported injured, according to KDPS, with two requiring hospitalization for their injuries.

The two hospitalized individuals have since been discharged, as confirmed by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Spokesman Zach Hamelton on Wednesday, April 16.

Hamelton mentioned that one of the injured has begun physical rehabilitation.

Witnesses were seen fleeing in various directions to escape the aftermath of the collision.

A truck that had been parked was pushed out of the frame, while a motorcycle fell over, spilling gasoline as a man scrambled away, clutching his face.

Authorities are still awaiting forensic and toxicology results before proceeding with the investigation.

The driver of the GMC Terrain involved in the incident has been cooperative during the investigation, according to police.

When questioned by police, the driver claimed he had not consumed alcohol that day, as per a police report obtained by MLive through the Freedom of Information Act.

According to the police report, the driver sustained a cut, which he attributed to the airbag deployment.

While investigating the accident, the driver was detained and consented to a blood draw; an officer noted that there was no smell of intoxicants during their interaction.

Several portions of the police report have been redacted by the city of Kalamazoo.
