Harley-Davidson Makes History with ‘World’s First Motorcycle Adventure’ Using Innovative Technology

An innovative rider has disclosed how he fueled his cherished Harley-Davidson motorcycle using a novel gasoline variant.

Aldo Steinfeld, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, has experimented with a sustainable fuel that has the potential to replace fossil fuels.

The synthetic fuel, developed using advanced technology by Synhelion, a company co-founded by Steinfeld, harnesses solar energy to transform water and carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral fuel.

Steinfeld was then able to fuel his bike and set out on a ground-breaking journey powered by this unique gasoline.

The fuel is produced at a facility near Dusseldorf, in Germany, where numerous mirrors concentrate sunlight on a ‘receiver’ located atop a tall structure.

In the tower, biomass, primarily agricultural waste, and water are introduced into a reactor that utilizes sunlight to instigate a chemical reaction for synthesizing gas comprised of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

This sequence of chemical reactions subsequently converts it into liquid hydrocarbons.

Speaking to National Geographic, Synhelion co-founder and co-CEO Philipp Furler remarked that the goal is to create “renewable fuels, such as solar jet fuel, diesel, and gasoline, which can seamlessly replace fossil fuels and are completely compatible with standard internal combustion engines, aircraft engines, and existing global fuel infrastructure.”

While fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide during their production and usage, this solar gasoline operates by harnessing water and carbon dioxide and recycling it with renewable energy into a synthetic fuel.

Furler also stated: ā€œOur renewable solar fuels are nearly carbon dioxide-neutral, releasing only as much carbon dioxide as was used in their production.ā€

He added that their fuel “provides the same range and engine performance as fossil gasoline.”

The proof lies in Aldo Steinfeld and his Harley-Davidson, which one Sunday morning took a trip along the shores of Lake Zurich fueled by the solar gasoline.

ā€œThe ride was smooth and uneventful in the best way – the Harley-Davidson performed as expected, powered by our solar gasoline,ā€ remarked Synhelion spokesperson Carmen Murer.

She noted: ā€œThe moment the engine roared to life with solar fuel for the first time was incredibly emotional.ā€

Steinfeld described the ride as ā€œa dream come true.ā€

In the following months and years, Synhelion intends to fuel various types of vehicles in public demonstrations.

ā€œThis was not about proving the fuel works – we are already aware it does as it meets national and international gasoline standards,ā€ Furler explained.

ā€œIt’s about creating a genuinely special moment.

ā€œWe aimed to celebrate Aldo’s lifelong commitment to science and see him enjoy riding his motorcycle powered by the very technology he helped to develop.ā€

Synhelion aims to produce 110,000 tons of fuel annually by 2030 and about one million tons by 2033.

While this is less than the approximately 385 million tons of jet fuel consumed each year, Synhelion hopes to supply roughly half of Europe’s synthetic aviation fuel demand by 2040.

Jonathan Scheffe, a mechanical engineer at the University of Florida who is not involved in this solar fuel research, added: “This historic demonstration signifies a major milestone, showcasing the first-ever industrial-scale production of sustainable fuels from water and carbon dioxide.ā€

He further stated that the advantage of solar fuel is its compatibility with traditional fuels without the need for significant alterations to machinery.

“This breakthrough holds significant implications, with potential applications not only in light-duty transportation, like the featured Harley-Davidson, but also in heavy-duty shipping and aviation, which will continue to require highly energy-dense liquid fuels for the foreseeable future,” Scheffe emphasized.

What happens if you put the wrong fuel in your tank?

Dwanye Saunders, owner of Genuine Automotive & Diesel in Austin, Texas, stated that the common mix-up isn’t as severe as most believe.

He told The U.S. Sun in an exclusive interview that there are certain indicators drivers should be aware of at the pumps to avoid using the incorrect fuel, and what steps to take if it occurs.

The first thing he mentioned is that most gas stations make it challenging to fill a gas-powered vehicle with diesel. At the pumps, the size matters.

“The diesel pump nozzle is typically much larger than a gasoline one,” he explained.

“Hence, it’s quite difficult to fill a gas tank with diesel; it’s actually easier to accidentally put gasoline in a diesel engine.”

If the incorrect fuel type is used, drivers will notice immediately, as the engine will run extremely poorly before shutting down. When this happens, it’s essential not to attempt restarting the vehicle, as it would push the fuel further into the system. Forcing the wrong fuel through an incompatible engine can lead to costly repairs or even necessitate an engine replacement.

Instead, it’s advisable to have your vehicle towed to a trusted mechanic, who will start the repair process.

“A competent mechanic would drain the fuel tank and flush the lines with fresh gasoline, possibly running some fuel system cleaner through it, and usually, it’s not detrimental,” noted Saunders.

Fashion Designers Are Embracing Innovative Vegan Leathers Made from Mushrooms and Apples

If you make a purchase of a product or service that has been independently reviewed through a link on our site, The Hollywood Reporter may earn an affiliate commission.

A century ago, when Harley Davidson unveiled the very first leather motorcycle jacket, they could not have predicted it would evolve into the timeless attire of the American rebel: tough, fierce, and brandishing a Brando-esque attitude.

Leather ā€œmotosā€ gained an iconic status since the ā€˜50s — aided by Elvis, The Ramones, and Michael Jackson — especially in L.A., where biker chic is woven into the local dress code. Nevertheless, while they present a cool facade, the reality behind every jacket (and pants and handbags) often involves the skins of various animals including cows, lambs, pigs, sheep, crocodiles, emus, deer, rabbits, and even horses, presenting a less appealing picture.

ā€œThe leather industry likes to suggest that leather is a by-product of the meat sector,ā€ asserts Ashley Byrne, president of PETA. ā€œIn reality, it is a co-product: They rely on each other for business. Both contribute to environmental issues resulting in water pollution, greenhouse gases, and toxic chemicals released from tanning processes.ā€ Byrne emphasizes that the environmentally friendly alternative of faux, or vegan, leather has surged alongside the popularity of faux fur. Stella McCartney, who launched her namesake brand in 2001, was the pioneer in using plant-only materials for leather, with no animal involvement at all. Materials such as cacti, fungi, mushrooms, grape skins, corn, apples, mango waste, and pineapple leaves which can create piƱatex, have been innovatively utilized in producing vegan leather, with new options continuously being developed.

With the involvement of LVMH, the conglomerate owning Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Givenchy and partnering with McCartney, a $200 million climate solutions fund has been established, encouraging extensive research into alternative plant fabrics. For winter 2009, she introduced the recycled plastic Falabella bag, which became popular with Kate Moss, BeyoncĆ©, and Rihanna — recognized as the first vegan ā€œItā€ bag. In summer 2022, she launched the Frayme Mylo bag, innovatively crafted from mycelium, a fungi-based alternative. The latest release this summer is the Hydefy Ryder, labeled as ā€œthe world’s first luxury bag derived from fungal micro-organisms.ā€ Imagine that: your bag and your meal have origins in similar plants.

In the last 15 years, advancements in sustainable technology have propelled vegan plant leather into the mainstream fashion (seen in retailers like Old Navy, Tom’s, Target, ASOS, ALDO, Zara, H&M) to mid- to high-end brands such as Alice + Olivia, ALC, Jonathan Simkhai, and The Frankie Shop. Numerous collections of vegan leather accessories have emerged, including chic handbags by New York’s Carter Wade, while ethical designer Collina Strada teamed up with Ugg on its inaugural line of vegan Uggs.

Now, let’s talk pricing. A stylish Loewe leather jacket commands $5,900. The luxuriously soft Rick Owens biker jacket ranges between $1,500 and $2,500. In contrast, you can acquire the Denny vegan leather blazer by Alice + Olivia for $495. So, can anyone truly spot the difference? Does it even matter? The Gap offers vegan leather jeans and skirts ranging from $20 to $60; Levi’s charges a bit more.

Vegan leather is making its mark on the red carpet as well, even if it often goes unnoticed. Emmanuelle Rienda, an established ethical fashion activist based in L.A., reveals she styled Olivia Rodrigo ā€œbecause she embodies a plant-based lifestyle.ā€ She collaborates with like-minded celebrities such as Jenna Ortega, Natalie Portman, and Lizzo.

On the Sunset Strip, co-founder Aleksandar Tomovic founded an entirely sustainable fashion showroom, Maison Privee, in 2017, featuring a ā€œGreen Roomā€ packed with vegan snack options sought after by stars like Rooney Mara, Elliot Page, and Sadie Sink. ā€œA decade ago,ā€ Tomovic reflects, ā€œvegan leather was synonymous with plastic and petroleum. Today, we have more positive, sustainable, and creative options available. Billie Eilish’s stylist frequently visits for garments, bags, and shoes. However, vegan footwear is still a challenge, as they haven’t been perfected yet.ā€

Eilish stands out as fashion’s loudest vegan advocate, driving major brands to embrace alternative leathers. In 2023, she collaborated with Gucci to unveil its inaugural vegan leather bag, made from wheat, corn, wood pulp, and viscose. ā€œMarket research indicates Gen Z and Millennials view shopping as a reflection of their values,ā€ observes PETA’s Byrne. Yet, how many Eilish fans that embrace ethical shopping can actually afford a $3,500 Gucci handbag? Regardless, she deserves credit for her efforts.

Rienda’s Vegan Fashion Week, which began six years ago as an ethical luxury conference, now showcases groundbreaking plant-based designs annually from around the world. ā€œI aimed to make ethical fashion enjoyable, enriched with compelling storytelling,ā€ Rienda states. ā€œThis movement encompasses more than animals; it involves three pillars: humans, animals, and the environment. Conversations with LVMH and Kering, the parent company of Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga, have been initiated. ā€œHermĆØs is now experimenting with mushroom-based leathers.ā€

In celebration of Earth Day, Ferragamo, one of Italy’s esteemed and longstanding leather brands, is launching a ā€œBack to Earthā€ capsule collection, featuring a new variant of its Hug Top Handle bag. While acknowledging the use of real leather, it is vegetable-tanned to minimize chemical usage and is produced in ethically certified factories.

ā€œIt’s a gradual journey,ā€ remarks ethical stylist Rienda. ā€œBut it is a beginning.ā€
