Victorian Man Sentenced for $2.4 Million Fraudulent GST Refund Scheme

A man from Victoria who accumulated $2.4 million through fraudulent GST refunds has been sentenced to over four years in prison after spending the money on luxurious living and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

This month, the County Court of Victoria sentenced Kristopher Andree-Jansz to four years and seven months of imprisonment, with a non-parole period set at two years and seven months for his role in the GST fraud scheme.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) initiated the investigation following an audit of GST refunds Andree-Jansz submitted from March 2021 to February 2022.

After registering for an ABN and portraying himself as a sole trader, he submitted over 30 Business Activity Statements (BAS) falsely claiming his plumbing business had made purchases totaling $30 million.

The audit revealed that Andree-Jansz had received $2.4 million in improper GST refunds and attempted to claim an additional $300,000.

The ATO found no evidence of any business activities “consistent with operating a plumbing business.”

According to the tax office, Andree-Jansz misused the GST funds for “various lifestyle items, luxurious accommodations, and a Harley Davidson motorcycle.”

The ATO forwarded the case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which took on the prosecution.

He faced 24 charges for obtaining a financial advantage through deception, and an additional three counts for attempting to dishonestly acquire a financial advantage.

In addition to his prison sentence, Andree-Jansz was ordered to repay $2,402,258.

“This debt is unavoidable; the individual will now have a financial obligation and interest will continue to accrue,” stated the ATO in a public announcement.

“Any refunds will be immediately deducted to offset the debt.”

This sentencing marks the latest significant outcome from Operation Protego, a task force led by the ATO to combat GST fraud.

This fraud scheme—exploited on social media platforms like TikTok—resulted in at least $2 billion being drained from public funds.

The tax office successfully thwarted an additional $2.7 billion in suspected GST fraud.

As of February 28, the ATO reported arresting 108 individuals linked to Operation Protego, with 98 convictions secured.

Among those convicted is a woman from Victoria who was sentenced last year to four years in prison for fraudulently claiming nearly $600,000 in GST refunds.

In response to the widespread fraud, the ATO promised last February to implement internal reforms as recommended by the Australian National Audit Office.

Man Arrested in Morro Bay for Writing Bad Check to Purchase Truck

Man Arrested in Morro Bay for Writing Bad Check to Purchase Truck

By JOSH FRIEDMAN

A 65-year-old man was apprehended in Morro Bay on Sunday after allegedly fleeing in a truck stolen from a Ford dealership in San Luis Obispo.

Just before 11 a.m., the Morro Bay police received a stolen vehicles notification through the city’s automated license plate reader system. This alert informed officers about the presence of a reported stolen vehicle within city limits, as stated by the Morro Bay Police Department.

Authorities located the vehicle, a 2024 Ford F-250, parked in the 700 block of Harbor Street. A 2025 Harley Davidson motorcycle was discovered in the truck’s bed.

Investigators found that the driver, Thomas Oliver Hight, had purchased the truck from Perry Ford in San Luis Obispo but did not have sufficient funds in his account to complete the payment. The dealership attempted to reclaim the vehicle, prompting it to report the F-250 as stolen.

Hight returned to Perry Ford intending to buy another vehicle. However, dealership personnel instructed him to either pay for the F-250 or return it. Hight declined and subsequently fled with the truck, damaging some landscaping as a Perry Ford staff member tried to prevent his departure.

Following his capture, Hight was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of vehicle theft. He remains in custody with a bail amounting to $70,000, as per the details on the SLO County Sheriff’s Office website.

The Morro Bay police have informed the San Luis Obispo and Fresno police departments about Hight’s arrest and related cases involving the Ford dealership and a Harley dealership.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses any relevant information to reach out to Sergeant Nicole Taylor at (805) 772-6233 or to contact San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.

Remains Discovered in Desert Identified as Missing Pahrump Man

PAHRUMP (KTNV) — After over two years, a Pahrump family is finally finding closure.

Daniel Core was last spotted in August 2022, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle near the intersection of Homestead Road and Gamebird Road in Pahrump.

His family reported him as missing in September 2022. Although the Nye County Sheriff’s Office undertook an extensive investigation, leads regarding Core’s location dissipated.

In June 2023, skeletal remains were discovered in the desert outside Pahrump.

After the Clark County coroner and medical examiner’s office were unable to identify the remains, detectives sought assistance from Othram. This Texas laboratory employs Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing to develop genealogical profiles, which can aid in discovering new leads.
With data from Othram, detectives confirmed the remains were those of Core.

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate Core’s disappearance and death as a potential homicide.

Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the sheriff’s office at (775) 751-7000. To remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555 or visit crimestoppersofnv.com.

A Girl and A Man with their Bikes

A Girl and A Man with their Bikes

A concept I had in my mind for Harley Davidson Sporster, a bike I am in love with… This will be the paint job on my bike gas tank; in the work.

This photo is made of real subjects taken from real life events and then transformed into what I call digital imprinting. The girl on the bike photo was taken at Daytona in 2013. The guy on the right photo is taken at Merritt Island in 2015. The two were digitally imprinted on a flame extracted from a photo taken off my chimney in my old house in Houston in 1999. It is tedious work but I was trying to get my first digital imprinting to bring about an abstract photo about the freedom spirit of bikers and their bikes.

From the flame that burn into a rider soul to take a bike and feel the wave of the wind as if it is flame to taste freedom
