Harley-Davidson Dealership Closes Following Unexpected Sale to Competitor, but Enthusiasts Can Still Purchase Bikes

A well-known Harley-Davidson dealership has shut its longstanding location, but there’s a silver lining for enthusiasts.

The proprietor of the storied outlet on Route 66 in St. Louis has acquired a local rival, merging both into a single entity under a fresh name.

Doc’s Harley-Davidson, established in 1955 and located at 930 S. Kirkwood Road, is owned by Evan and Dina Schipper, a couple from Indiana who manage several Harley dealerships across the Midwest.

They have evened the playing field with their latest acquisition—Gateway Harley-Davidson, once a principal competitor of Doc’s.

Now, both dealerships have combined at Gateway’s previous site.

According to Biz Journals, the new dealership will operate as St. Louis Harley-Davidson, having opened last Tuesday at the former Gateway location.

Expect updates to signage and plans for renovations in the near future.

The consolidation decision, supported by Harley-Davidson itself, arises from the perception that St. Louis has an excess of Harley-Davidson dealerships.

The area, known for its substantial Harley community and loyal following, initially drew them to invest in a dealership in St. Louis.

Other local dealership options include Green Mount Road Harley-Davidson in O’Fallon, Illinois; Ted’s Motorcycle World in Alton; St. Charles Harley-Davidson in St. Charles; and Gold Star Harley-Davidson in Festus.

“In order to successfully navigate the current business conditions and financial challenges presented by the economy, we faced obstacles that led to the merger,” Schipper stated.

“We finally managed to get everything aligned to make this happen.”

Harley-Davidson makes history with ‘world’s first motorcycle ride’ using cutting-edge inventions.

He also expresses hope that long-time patrons from both locations will embrace the new dealership.

“I believe it’s not just the site that defines a dealership,” he remarked.

“In my opinion, it’s the people who work there and the relationships fostered between St. Louis customers and employees that matter most.

“Our customers will continue to see familiar faces from Doc’s Harley-Davidson and Gateway Harley-Davidson at the new St. Louis Harley-Davidson.”

All of Doc’s employees transitioned to the new location, and nearly all but five Gateway employees who opted to leave will stay, resulting in about 40 combined employees.

Schipper anticipates that this merger will streamline operations and that the business will expand to a level that allows for future hiring.

Harley-Davidson Closures in 2024

There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships across the United States.

However, several locations have closed in 2024 for various reasons, some with little explanation.

Below is a list of some Harley-Davidson dealerships that have closed this year along with their reasons for closure:

A location in San Francisco closed in June 2024 after 110 years due to ‘chaos’ caused by new management.

Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, shut its doors in September 2024 with no specific reason stated.

Harley-Davidson’s legacy location in New York City closed on September 28, 2024, as the owner cited economic issues.

Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, shut down in October 2024 after the owners sold the business to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.

Another Illinois dealership closed in November 2024.

Moreover, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, is temporarily closing for the season from November 2 until April 1, 2024.

Harley-Davidson CEO Hints at Next Phase in Transition to Smaller Bikes with Launch of Exciting New Series

HARLEY-Davidson’s leadership has hinted at the brand’s upcoming shift toward smaller motorcycles with the introduction of a new series.

The iconic motorcycle manufacturer appears poised to embrace the growing trend of small-capacity bikes, offering more affordable models that could entice new riders to the fold.

This information comes from MCN, which reports that the company’s executives are exploring entry into the low-capacity segment after discontinuing the entry-level Forty-Eight and 883 Sportsters in Europe.

Harley-Davidson is well-known for its larger cruisers but does have a number of lightweight models available internationally.

An example is the single-cylinder X440, produced by Hero MotoCorp for India, which features an attractive starting price.

Additionally, competing smaller bikes, like the Honda GB350S and Triumph Speed 400, have gained popularity in the UK market since their launch—prompting the American brand’s intention to capture a share of that market.

Kolja Rebstock, Harley-Davidson’s Vice President for International Markets, stated: “We lost volume when we discontinued the Sportster model line, which was previously very successful.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t very beneficial from a financial perspective to the company. The challenge is determining how we can enter the market with smaller entry-level products while achieving the necessary financial outcomes.”

“Our R&D team is concentrating on this issue.

“There is clear demand—we cannot reveal specifics about what’s in development just yet, but we recognize the need for a pathway into the brand.”

He further noted: “We possess excellent production capabilities in Thailand.”

“A significant portion of our motorcycles for international markets are produced at this facility, and the feedback regarding quality has been outstanding.”

The new Harley Davidson is both “elegant and brutal,” featuring woven seats and stylish wheels—the rear setup has undergone a complete redesign.

Transitioning toward lighter bikes aligns with Harley’s goal to diversify its customer base and change old perceptions about the brand.

Rebstock continued: “We must remain loyal to our core customers.

“However, the more we adhere strictly to that, the more we risk alienating ourselves if we fail to reach out to new [customers].”

Models like the Pan America and Sportster S are examples of this strategy, though the company is often still associated with its cruiser-heavy lineup.

“We are still often seen as the company that only produces Softail models, such as our iconic Fat Boy and larger touring bikes. However, that is misleading—we actually have a significantly broader model range,” he explained.

“I am often surprised when I engage with individuals who are unaware of the fantastic adventure touring motorcycle we have been selling since 2021, the Pan America. This bike has proven itself in the most challenging conditions, even during the Africa Eco Race.

“We also offer iconic models that appear to be unchanged, but constant evolution is taking place to modernize our bikes.

“We have a plethora of exciting ideas in the pipeline for the future.”

While making bikes more affordable is one focus, they are also looking to attract a more diverse audience.

Rebstock remarked: “I believe there is a significant opportunity for us to demonstrate our openness to women riders—this is a crucial market for us to tap into.

“[Especially as] certain markets are observing a trend where more women than men are obtaining their motorcycle licenses.”

According to ESPN, Harley-Davidson and MotoGP—the top motorcycle road racing series—have announced a support championship set to debut in 2026, showcasing teams racing bagger bikes at grand prix events across Europe and North America.

Riders will compete on race-configured Harley-Davidson Road Glide bagger motorcycles, designed for long-distance travel.

This 12-race series will be held at six grand prix events within the MotoGP schedule, with an estimated six to eight teams featuring two riders each.

No specific venues have been confirmed yet, although it is widely expected that one will be the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz stated: “This represents a bold new direction for Harley-Davidson’s global racing initiatives.”

“With this series, we are thrilled to introduce a new form of racing to an international audience.”

As noted by AutoSport, he added, “The bike will reach speeds exceeding 300 km/h, weigh around 280 kg, and generate 200 bhp.

“These are powerful machines that will take to the tracks in Europe and North America.”

This announcement follows the opening of a new Harley-Davidson dealership in a key US location, overcoming various hurdles to bring the vision to fruition.

To celebrate its grand opening, a notable figure made a special appearance, kicking off this exciting new phase for the store.

On its inaugural day in business, the celebration attracted a large crowd of fans and community members, complete with live entertainment and food vendors.

The festivities concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the dealership’s official launch.

Located in Greene County, Virginia, the new Stonewall Harley-Davidson dealership was visited by Karen Davidson, a prominent figure in the Harley-Davidson community, who participated in the ceremonial “chain cutting.”

Davidson is the great-granddaughter of a co-founder of Harley-Davidson and the daughter of Willie G. Davidson, a legendary designer and icon associated with the brand.

Along with the chain-cutting, she engaged with fans and signed copies of the memoir ‘Ride Free’ by Willie G. Davidson.

Willie Little transformed a 1996 Harley Davidson Sportster by adding a shiny chrome finish.

Equipped with a six-inch oversized springer front end and a one-inch lower back, it features a custom sissy bar.

According to Little, an engineer, this motorcycle is one of his prized possessions. He undertook the project during the COVID lockdown.

In 2019, he purchased the 1200cc Sportster for $5,000, importing various parts from the United States.

When the pandemic struck, it provided him ample opportunity to enhance his bike.

He completely disassembled it, replaced the front end, lowered the rear, and crafted a personalized sissy bar.

He switched the belt drive for a chain, installed a new exhaust system, and applied custom chrome and paint finishes.

Additionally, he attached a compact 1950s-style peanut tank that holds approximately 3.5 liters of fuel.

“Just enough to get you to the pub and back,” he remarked.

The motorcycle was showcased at the Originals Ashburton motorcycle show and shine at the Ashburton RSA last Saturday.

Approximately 40 bikes from various makes and models, ranging from 1953 to 2025, were displayed both inside and outside the venue.

Little completed the motorcycle in time for last year’s annual bike show in November.

In line with his love for Harley Davidson, his forthcoming project involves rebuilding a Pan America.

Harley-Davidson: Is Your Own Harley Finally Within Reach? Growing Hope for Zero Duty on Iconic American Bikes Excites Indian Enthusiasts

Harley Davidson pricing in India: The aspiration of Indian Harley-Davidson enthusiasts to ride proudly on a large American motorcycle may have gained significant momentum, based on reports suggesting impending substantial duty reductions. According to a report by The Times of India on April 25, the government is contemplating the extension of duty-free import options for certain vehicles from the U.S., which includes motorcycles boasting engine capacities greater than 1,600cc, depending on the establishment of a favorable agreement in critical interest areas. It is worth noting that some of the benefits being negotiated may be limited by quotas, meaning that the reductions in duty could pertain only to a specific number of units imported under the envisioned bilateral trade deal, as indicated in the report.

It’s important to highlight that the United States has been exerting considerable pressure on India to lower tariffs on several goods, such as vehicles, whiskey, and agricultural products, claiming that the high import duties hinder American exports.

While India did lower customs duties on certain products like premium motorcycles and bourbon in February, the Trump administration has remained unsatisfied, pushing for further cuts. Harley Davidson motorcycles and Tesla vehicles have become a priority for Trump, especially given Elon Musk’s close ties with the U.S. President.

Musk has been actively lobbying for lower import tariffs during his discussions with Indian officials, a request previously declined by the government. Nevertheless, India introduced a new policy last year that implemented a temporary 15% tariff rate, with the condition that participating companies establish manufacturing facilities in the country.

The SC issued notices to complainant Nripendra Pandey, who filed a complaint accusing Rahul Gandhi for "intentionally" insulting Savarkar during a rally, and the Uttar Pradesh government, on the Congress leader's plea seeking their responses.TNN

Detailed guidelines regarding these tariffs are expected to be unveiled shortly, as inter-ministerial discussions are underway. A significant reduction in tariffs could potentially reshape investment decisions. With the threat of retaliatory tariffs looming, the commerce department, leading negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement, is collaborating with various government departments and ministries. These entities are actively consulting industry representatives and other relevant stakeholders. While formal negotiations on specific sectors have yet to commence, a delegation headed by India’s chief negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, is currently in Washington to tackle outstanding issues and explore the possibility of an “early tranche” of agreements.

Initially, discussions between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to finalize the first tranche by fall (September-October), which would include import duties on goods, non-tariff barriers, and strategies to optimize the supply chain.

India remains hopeful that, in exchange for concessions offered, the Trump administration will abstain from imposing the 26% reciprocal tariffs that are presently on hold for 90 days, while also considering reductions on duties related to labor-intensive exports such as textiles and leather goods from India.

Harley-Davidson Executive Claims Bikes Will Be Priced at $124,000 Amidst ‘Devastating’ Industry Shift with a ‘Simple Request’

HARLEY-Davidson may soon increase the prices of its motorcycles as the industry undergoes significant changes.

A worsening trade dispute and subsequent tariffs enforced by the European Union on American-manufactured motorcycles, including those from Harley-Davidson, might prompt the well-known brand to shift its production operations.

As reported by Biz Journals, a leading Harley executive recently informed a Congressional subcommittee that the firm is at risk of facing a “devastating” and “indefensible” 56% tariff on American-made motorcycles sold in Europe.

Consequently, the company has requested Congress to negotiate fair trade agreements with the European Union, Canada, and Asian nations.

However, earlier this month, the EU stated that in retaliation to President Donald Trump’s administration imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, it would increase tariffs on American products—including motorbikes, boats, and bourbon.

Jonathan Root, the firm’s chief financial officer and president of commercial operations, indicated that this situation would lead to a 56% tariff on American-manufactured Harleys sold in the EU.

Root addressed the subcommittee, stating: “My request today is straightforward—fairness.”

“It is evident that Harley-Davidson is being unjustly discriminated against and politically targeted by the EU and Canada.

Root contends that these tariffs are unjust, discriminatory, and driven by political motivations, highlighting that Harley-Davidson has already incurred significant costs from a previous 2018 tariff amounting to around $166 million.

He mentioned that the company managed this impact without passing the costs onto consumers.

“We are not seeking protectionism, merely fairness,” he emphasized.

“A 56% tariff is indefensible and will hinder our capacity to sell motorcycles in Europe.”

Harley-Davidson’s Accessory Mode

Root pointed out how other foreign markets impose luxury taxes reaching up to 150% and additional non-tariff barriers, citing Denmark as an example, where a 25% value-added tax and a 150% luxury tax are applied.

If any supplementary EU retaliatory tariff is applied, the price of a Harley-Davidson Road Glide sold in Denmark could soar to $124,000, significantly higher than the $28,000 starting price in the U.S.

This situation arises as Harley registered 25,860 new motorcycle registrations in Europe in 2024, compared to 94,383 in the U.S.

The figures encompass motorcycles sold in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom according to the latest Form 10-K annual report from the company.

Root also highlighted that Harley sources 70 to 80% of its parts from U.S. suppliers and provides jobs for 4,500 American workers out of a total workforce of 5,500.

He reinforced the company’s commitment to manufacturing in the U.S. and urged for a level playing field in international trade.
