Red River in Wichita Falls, Texas, gained a loyal following in the motorcycle community by providing Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which are proudly made in America.
According to data from Scrape Hero, there are more than 630 Harley-Davidson dealerships across the United States, including 41 in Texas.
However, the rate of dealership closures has accelerated alarmingly, with the company reporting a staggering 53% decline in motorcycle sales for 2023, as noted by News Atlas.
The company issued a heartfelt statement on Facebook, expressing gratitude to its loyal customers and recognizing the efforts of the original owners, Jim and Vickie Gilmore.
“When you love what you do, it shows. We don’t have the words to convey how much we have enjoyed sharing our love for Harley-Davidson with all of you over the last 40 years, which is such an understatement,” the post read.
The family-owned establishment first opened in 1985 when Jim and Vickie, the “two young lovebirds,” realized their dream of running a motorcycle shop.
The Gilmore children, Jason and Bobbie, followed their parents’ footsteps, learning “the ways of Harley from the best.”
“The dedication and passion the family shared with each other and with you, combined with an immense amount of hard work, allowed Red River H-D to grow into an award-winning dealership known for its honesty, integrity, and unyielding passion for Harley riding,” continued the statement.
“Jim, Vickie, Jason, Bobbie, Ace & Hank the Shop Dogs want to extend a personal thank you from our family to yours for your support throughout these 40 years!”
The post concluded with the sorrowful news that the store is “unable to continue another year.”
Driver buys car from dealership then gets pulled over for paperwork issue – move by seller made the vehicle illegal
“2025 marks our 40th anniversary, but it is bittersweet for RRHD as we’ve had to sell our dealership.”
“Jim, Jason, Bobbie, and Alyssa will remain in the Service Department under the new ownership. Copperhead H-D will officially open for business at this location on Tuesday.”
A photo of the family in front of the Red River dealership was attached to the post.
The post drew over 300 reactions from Facebook users and numerous comments from devoted customers.
“RRHD has undeniably been the finest vehicle dealership of any kind I’ve ever worked with. The entire staff was consistently exceptional,” commented one user.
“I always valued that I was never pressured to ‘up-sell’. I will certainly miss the Gilmores, but I hope the new owners retain the staff we’ve come to cherish.”
Another supporter thanked the Gilmores for their years of hard work and their positive influence on North Texas.
Harley-Davidson Closures in 2024
There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships across America.
However, numerous stores have closed for various reasons throughout 2024 – if any explanation was provided at all.
Here is a list of some Harley-Davidson locations that have shut their doors this year, along with the reasons provided for their closure:
Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, closed its doors in October 2024 after the owners sold the business to Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.
In 2025, Hideout Harley-Davidson in Missouri announced it would be closing at the end of March.
“To the Gilmore Family: thank you so much for everything you’ve done for the Harley-Davidson family in North Texas,” wrote a commenter.
“Your reputation for fairness and meticulous attention to detail is known throughout the State of Texas. Thank you for 40 years of dedication and service to the brand. Godspeed!!”
Just a few days after the Facebook post on March 22, Red River Harley-Davidson’s logo was changed to that of Copperhead Harley-Davidson.
The new ownership announced the change in a post on March 24, stating: “BIG NEWS: Red River Harley-Davidson is now Copperhead Harley-Davidson Wichita Falls!”
“We are thrilled to introduce Willy and Donna Sullivan as the new owners of Copperhead Harley-Davidson Wichita Falls.”
The newly rebranded shop is now open for business in Wichita Falls, Texas.
A longstanding Harley-Davidson dealership is closing, signifying a significant moment for motorcycle enthusiasts.

The Joplin dealership has been a staple for riders in southwest Missouri for many years.
“After proudly serving the SWMO Community and helping riders find their Freedom on the open road, we’ll close our doors for the final time on Monday, March 31st – Forever grateful for the memories and journeys shared,” the dealership stated.
This news was made public on Tuesday, March 4.
In order to reduce inventory, Hideout Harley-Davidson is offering substantial discounts on bikes and parts until the end of March.
The news has left many fans disheartened, with many considering the store’s contribution to the local community.
“Wow!! Never thought I’d see this happen,” expressed one surprised customer.
Another attributed the brand’s struggles to various factors: “Their target market has aged out. With interest rates being super high and the used Harley market being very plentiful, that spells disaster for discretionary products.”
Some speculated about the dealership’s inventory, with one asserting, “Downstream casino bought four of them and are going to give them away.”
Many expressed sorrow over the loss of a cherished gathering place.
“SO sad to hear that they are closing. Loved going there,” lamented one enthusiast.
Harley-Davidson riders point to glaring ‘oversight’ by brand after chain’s stock plummets & dealerships close for good
“Really sad. They were one of the few stores that helped bring the community together and put on events,” another fan remarked.
Riders who depended on the dealership for training were particularly disheartened.
“I’m more sad about the fact we’ll be losing the motorcycle safety driving class,” one commented.
Some pointed to competitive pressures and management issues as contributing factors.
“They couldn’t really compete with other dealerships that are within an hour or two away. They also got rid of most of the good employees and lost customers by doing that,” claimed a user.
Harley-Davidson closures in 2024
There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships across America.
Nonetheless, numerous stores have closed for a variety of reasons throughout 2024 – some without providing an explanation.
Here’s a list of some Harley-Davidson locations that have shut down this year along with their reasons for closing:
Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, ceased operations in October after the owners sold the business to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.
The dealership’s closure coincides with Harley-Davidson’s ongoing significant decline in sales and revenue.
Several Harley-Davidson dealerships across the US closed last year, including sites in New York City, San Francisco, and Titusville, Florida.
The company recorded a 60% dip in revenue and sold 53% fewer motorcycles in the last quarter of 2024 as opposed to 2023, according to News Atlas.
North America experienced a 13% drop in sales during the final three months of 2024.
The company attributes the decline to economic volatility and increased interest rates.
Harley shipped 148,862 motorcycles globally in 2024, a 17% reduction compared to the prior year.
As dealerships grapple with excessive inventory, Harley announced intentions to scale back shipments.
The company anticipates revenue will either remain flat or decrease by another 5% in 2025.

A beloved Harley-Davidson dealership is preparing for a relocation, but won’t be operational for several months.
The Big Moose Harley-Davidson in Portland, Maine, will be moving from its current location on Riverside Street to Main Street in Gorham, approximately 20 miles away, in a deal worth $2.85 million.

The new site, previously a furniture store, spans nearly four acres and boasts significant visibility, with thousands of vehicles passing daily, as reported by Maine Biz.
Charles Day, who facilitated the deal, stated: “This property, due to its size and current condition, which allows for efficient organization, was particularly appealing.
“Additionally, the location sees strong traffic.”
The new dealership will be in capable hands, as the purchasing entity, 673 Main Street LLC, is owned by Al Contois and Shawn Lillie, who also run a flagship dealership, Seacoast Harley-Davidson in North Hampton, New Hampshire.
They also operate additional locations in Rochester, New Hampshire, and Revere, Massachusetts.
Altogether, these four dealerships, featuring Harley-Davidson motorcycles, merchandise, parts, and accessories, are part of the New England Motorcycle Group.
This move presents an opportunity for more space and a fresh beginning for the dealership, as the Portland rental was becoming inadequate for the business.
As a result, Contois and Lillie opted to purchase and renovate a new site, with over a year spent in search of the ideal location.
“The design flow is better,” remarked Contois. “This store is essentially a large box, making it much easier for us to organize.”
The store’s design will follow a template from a Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee, which includes guidelines for both exterior and interior styles, along with specific signage requirements and finishing details for both inside and outside.
Harley-Davidson enthusiasts highlight a significant ‘oversight’ by the brand following a decline in stock and permanent dealership closures
Interior demolition of the building is anticipated to commence soon.
Contois expressed optimism about moving in by the end of October.
The existing staff will remain intact, with 15 employees transferring from Portland.
Overall investment for the new site, including property acquisition, is projected to be around $7 million.
Contois is optimistic about the relocation, citing license registration data indicating that numerous riders reside in the Gorham region, which is more conveniently located for riding compared to their current site.
“When you think about it, riders typically don’t take their motorcycles into downtown Portland,” he said.
“Usually, those who live in Portland prefer to ride into the surrounding areas.”
Jensen noted: “The roads in that area offer safer riding conditions than those in Portland.”
“This provides us the chance to appeal to younger individuals in their mid-20s to early 30s.”
From the town’s perspective, the arrival of this business in Gorham is also a positive development.
Jensen added: “This area has excellent visibility for businesses.
“Big Moose, in particular, will greatly enhance the curb appeal.”
Harley-Davidson Closures in 2024
There are more than 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships nationwide.
However, numerous stores have shut down for various reasons throughout 2024, often without explanation.
Here’s a list of some Harley-Davidson locations that have closed this year along with their reasons:
Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, closed in October after the owners sold the business to the Walter Brothers Harley-Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.
The motorcycle dealership operated by Heritage Automotive Group in Swindon has officially closed.
Heritage Automotive Group, recognized as the 50th largest in the Motor Trader Top 200 Dealer Groups with an annual revenue of £320.2 million, represents brands such as Audi, Honda, Volkswagen, Skoda, and Volkswagen Vans.
A report from The Sun indicates that the motorcycle business in Swindon became “unfeasible to continue” due to persistent financial difficulties.
Founded in 1995, the dealership featured eight motorcycle brands, including Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha.
A representative stated: “We want to inform you that Blade Motorcycles Swindon has now closed.
“This was not an easy decision; despite our unwavering passion for motorcycles and commitment to serving our customers, the ongoing financial difficulties of sustaining the Swindon location have rendered it unfeasible to continue.
“We realize this news may come as a surprise, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding.”
Additionally, Heritage has closed the Blade Oxford Harley-Davidson branch located in Abingdon, as mentioned in a report by Visordown. The group still represents Ducati, Harley Davidson, Honda, Live Wire, and Triumph, maintaining dealerships in Oxford, Cheltenham, Abingdon, and Stratford.
Fans express concerns that HARLEY-DAVIDSON may face extinction unless it adapts, following the CEO’s stark warning and the shutdown of several dealerships.
Among the various suggestions from supporters of the brand are the introduction of electric bikes and more compact models to help sustain its presence in the market.

Following CEO Jochen Zeitz’s recent disclosure that sales have been “significantly” affected, many fans took to social media to voice their worries.
A financial report indicated that since 2023, the company has faced a revenue loss of nearly £250m, a situation Jochen attributed to challenges across the industry.
In his statement, he remarked: “The industry has faced numerous challenges over the last couple of years, impacting all levels, but we believe we are well-positioned to capitalize on any rise in consumption.”
However, fans were quick to criticize the company for lagging behind current trends.

One commenter suggested, “Marketing bikes at reasonable prices would be a good starting point.”
Another stated, “Harley must adapt or it will perish.”
A third wrote, “The many dealership closures in the past two years have negatively impacted consumer confidence in the brand. I ride a 114 fat bob, and while I’ve owned Harleys for years, my next bike will likely be a vintage model.”
One fan attributed the company’s issues to its marketing strategy, commenting that it seemed to be “targeting the converted.” The emotive ads have been described as “cringeworthy” by some.
Harley-Davidson dealership shutting after just 5 years for very different use – customers know what to blame for closure
“Consumers have moved on,” lamented one fan, suggesting that the brand would benefit from abandoning its “emotion-driven” marketing altogether.
Another proposed introducing an electric bike as a remedy for the company’s financial struggles, saying, “If it were priced affordably, it could really make a difference.”
One enthusiast even proposed launching a Harley-Davidson apparel line that could be sold through supermarkets.
What has contributed to Harley-Davidson’s decline?
The decline of Harley-Davidson in recent years is attributed to an older customer demographic, elevated prices, and evolving consumer preferences.
Once a titan in the motorcycle sector, the brand now struggles to draw younger riders who prefer lighter, more economical, and versatile bikes as opposed to Harley’s heavy cruisers.
The company’s dependence on premium pricing has rendered its motorcycles unaffordable for many, while rivals, particularly from Japan and Europe, provide cheaper and more innovative options.

The decline has escalated due to the closure of multiple dealerships, which has undermined consumer confidence, alongside unsuccessful attempts to penetrate international markets plagued by fierce rivalry and a lack of region-specific models.
Even with modernization efforts like the electric LiveWire, Harley has been sluggish when it comes to innovation, and its high price points have left new technology out of reach for many buyers.
Additional factors such as economic difficulties, supply chain issues, and a heavy reliance on nostalgic branding have further complicated the situation.
To survive, Harley-Davidson must adapt—by reducing prices, broadening its electric range, and rethinking its marketing strategy to engage new demographics.
Otherwise, the iconic brand may face the risk of fading into obscurity.

Steven Towers, who operates Harley-Davidson dealerships in North Carolina and Nebraska, will take over the operation on January 14.

He expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty and passion, stating they have become an “extension of our family.”
“It’s a tough decision to part ways with something that has been integral to my life and my family’s story, but I trust Steven Towers as the next keeper of Historic Harley-Davidson,” Patterson remarked.

Motorcycle Equipment Tips
BEFORE mounting a motorcycle and heading out, riders need to be aware of the essential gear required for safety.
Riders are advised to protect themselves as much as possible before hitting the highway adjacent to other vehicles.
This means that every motorist should definitely have a top-quality motorcycle helmet that fits well.
It’s also essential to cover as much skin as possible, so wearing pants and a riding jacket is crucial.
Safety-conscious riders may go further by always keeping riding gloves handy and wearing boots while on the road.
Cycle World states, “When justifying spending on gear, ask yourself: What is that body part worth? Then spend accordingly.”
“It’s always bittersweet to bid farewell
but I hope, as you said, the new owner will embody your same caring attitude.”
“Thank you for countless memories,” another commenter added.
A former employee remarked, “It was an honor and a privilege to work under you, Mike! Wishing you and your family all the best as you embark on this new chapter for History Harley Davidson.”
“Many thanks to the Patterson family. I still have my first leather jacket bought from the shop on 6th Street,” another nostalgic customer shared.
Another patron was visibly emotional about the news.
“I’m in tears as I reflect on all the wonderful moments we shared at your dealership,” wrote one shopper.
“Thank you for the beautiful memories and may God bless you and your family in your future endeavors.”
The crockpots were steaming at the Faribault Harley Davidson dealership during Soup Saturday on December 28.
Inside the expansive Harley store, a table was set up with slow cookers filled with cheddar broccoli and chicken wild rice soup. This warm meal was offered free to customers, providing a cozy respite on a chilly winter day.
Soup service started at 11 a.m. and continued until the last drop was served.
This marked the second Soup Saturday of the season at Faribault Harley Davidson, with the first taking place on December 14. Due to inclement weather, the initial turnout was less than expected, but this event saw a much stronger attendance with temperatures climbing into the 40s outside.
The initiative was part of an endeavor by Faribault Harley Davidson’s Event Coordinator Miranda Gruenhagen to host events each Saturday in December, aiming to boost business and foster community spirit during the holiday season.
In addition to soup, customers also had the option for complimentary gift wrapping for their purchases.
Ann Hofmeister, owner of Faribault Harley Davidson, embraced the Soup Saturday concept as an opportunity to attract visitors during the colder months.
“It just feels warm and inviting,” Hofmeister remarked. “It’s a way to entice folks to stop by and shop with us. With Christmas shopping season winding down, this might be a good way to draw people in.”
The dealership has been in the Hofmeister family for 48 years, tracing back to Ann Hofmeister’s father, Bob Hofmeister, who acquired the business in 1977 before handing it over to Ann.
“He was passionate about motorcycles and riding Harley Davidson, so what better way to honor that legacy than by serving the community?” Hofmeister shared.
Hofmeister herself is an avid motorcyclist who enjoys being part of the motorcycle community.
“I love touring across the country, going on day trips and weekend rides. I cherish the camaraderie, friendships, beautiful scenery, fresh air, and the thrill of riding,” Hofmeister expressed. “The people are wonderful, and there’s definitely a sense of community among riders.”
For Hofmeister, the Harley Davidson brand holds significant meaning.
“Harley has been manufacturing motorcycles since 1903, so the history is rich,” she noted. “There’s an emotional connection to these bikes. They’re not just machines; they resonate deeply within your soul.”
Rock Branderhorst, a regular customer at Faribault Harley Davidson, attended both Soup Saturdays at the dealership. He appreciates the welcoming atmosphere created by the staff and fellow patrons.
“Everyone has treated me well, from the mechanics to the sales team,” Branderhorst remarked. “I have no complaints.”
Like Hofmeister, Branderhorst’s passion for Harley Davidson has been passed down through his family.
“My parents rode Harleys,” Branderhorst shared. “I guess it’s in my blood.”
His interest in Harley Davidson sparked from the brand’s customization opportunities.
“I had owned other bikes, like a Norton, but I was really drawn to customizing,” Branderhorst recalled. “Back in the late 60s and early 70s, Harley was undoubtedly the best choice for customization, and that’s exactly what I did. I fully customized my bike.”
The next event at Faribault Harley Davidson will be the 14th annual Casino Night on Saturday, January 18. There will be various games to enjoy, including Black Jack, Texas Hold ‘em, Beat the House, 3-Card Poker, Red Dog, Pokerlette, and Plinko, along with live music, food, and drinks.
