Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for 82,000 Motorcycles Due to Serious Crash Risk!

Before you gear up to hit the road on your Harley, it’s wise to confirm whether your bike is among the 82,100 Harley Davidson motorcycles being recalled due to a significant crash hazard.

FOX Business reports that the recall affects 82,000 Harley Davidson Softails, which have a malfunctioning component on the rear tire that could result in sudden tire deflation, potentially leading to an immediate accident.

Before you panic, check if your Harley belongs to the recalled models:

  • 2018-2019 FLDE
  • 2018-2021 FLHC
  • 2018-2024 FLHCS
  • 2018 and 2023 FLHCS ANV
  • 2020-2024 FXLRS
  • 2022-2024 FXLRST
  • 2022 FXRST Softail motorcycles

If you’re unsure whether your bike has the rear shock adjuster mounting tab that might fracture and lead to tire deflation, Harley Davidson will be sending letters to all known owners of these models this month.

Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for 82,000 Motorcycles Due to Serious Crash Risk!

Recalls are not uncommon for Harley Davidson — over the past 12 years, they have had at least five recalls, starting with three consecutive years of recalls.

In 2013, the company recalled 29,000 motorcycles due to a clutch system issue. Then in 2014, they recalled thousands due to a defective brake master cylinder, and by 2015, they had to pull back even more bikes due to a fuel pump problem.

This current recall is particularly serious, as it could result in a sudden loss of motorcycle control, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA].

If you have one of the recalled motorcycles, please take it to your nearest authorized Harley Davidson dealer for a resolution at no charge.

Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for 82,100 Motorcycles Due to Tire Pressure-Related Crash Hazard

Harley-Davidson is issuing a recall for more than 82,100 Softail motorcycles due to a defective component that may compromise the rear tire, leading to a sudden loss of pressure.

The manufacturer reported in a statement submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that certain 2018-2019 FLDE, 2018-2021 FLHC, 2018-2024 FLHCS, 2018 and 2023 FLHCS ANV, 2020-2024 FXLRS, 2022-2024 FXLRST, and 2022 FXRST Softail motorcycles may feature a rear shock adjuster mounting tab that is susceptible to fracturing.

The company plans to notify owners of the potentially affected Softail motorcycles with a letter regarding the recall by mid-June.

Owners must take their motorcycle to an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer for the necessary repairs, in line with the recall report.

The service will involve the replacement of “new hardware,” including a new bracket that restricts the movement of the preload adjuster and prevents contact with the rear tire, as described in the recall report. The service will be complimentary.

Some Softail motorcycles currently recalled were “previously serviced” under a different recall and “will need the new remedy applied,” according to the NHTSA. That previous recall, which took place in August 2023, affected over 65,200 units.

Harley-Davidson indicated in the latest NHTSA recall announcement that no incidents of crashes or injuries linked to this issue have been reported.

“Other Softail models that use a different style of rear shock adjuster are not part of this recall,” the company also mentioned in the report.

Harley-Davidson provides a webpage where motorcycle owners can verify if their bike is subject to a recall using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is usually located on the steering head or on a label attached to the right front down tube of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, as indicated on the website.

On a global scale, the company reported the shipment of nearly 149,000 motorcycles across various categories throughout 2024.

Expert Sounds Alarm: Iconic US Motorcycle Brand at Risk Due to Trump’s EU Tariffs

Motorcycle specialists have cautioned that Donald Trump‘s intensifying trade battle could jeopardize the legendary American brand Harley-Davidson.

The president has announced plans for a series of tariffs set to unfold on Wednesday, prompting trade partners to promise retaliation.

European Union officials are reportedly contemplating imposing 50 percent tariffs on American products including Jack Daniel’s whiskey, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and Levi’s jeans.

Industry consultant Michael Uhlarik is warning that elevated taxes could drive prices up and potentially inflict irreversible harm to the company in Europe.

“Even a minor increase of 10 to 20 percent in costs, combined with a general disdain for American brands, could prove fatal,” he told The Wall Street Journal.

The starting price for Harley’s Road Glide, a touring model, is $28,000 in the U.S. However, with the addition of the country’s 25 percent value-added tax and a 150 percent luxury tax, it costs around $77,000.

The new EU tariff proposal could inflate the Road Glide’s price to $124,000, according to the company.

Harley’s Chief Financial Officer, Jonathan Root, addressed Congress on Tuesday, highlighting that their products are subjected to unfair trading practices in various markets, and called for reciprocal duties to be applied to their foreign competitors exporting motorcycles to the U.S.

“Competitor brands should not benefit from low-cost manufacturing and favorable import duties when entering the U.S. market,” Root stated.

The legendary American brand faced significant backlash last year after activists brought attention to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Outraged motorcyclists distanced themselves from the iconic motorcycle maker, criticizing CEO Jochen Zeitz for his endorsement of stringent policies surrounding trans rights for children, critical race theory, climate change, and DEI.

This backlash compelled the company to retract its stance in August, stating they were disheartened by the social media negativity, which they claimed was “designed to divide the Harley-Davidson community.”

They added: “We have not maintained a DEI function since April 2024, and we do not currently have any DEI functions in place.”

“We do not impose hiring quotas and have eliminated diversity spending goals for suppliers.”

The company asserted they would reevaluate all their sponsorships and affiliations with external organizations.

Their statement indicated they would implement a process to review all sponsorships internally and suggested they might drop some of them.

The company stated they would concentrate on driving the sport of motorcycling forward.

Additionally, they announced they would cease their association with the Human Rights Campaign, a prominent LGBTQ+ advocacy organization.

Their statement concluded: “We remain dedicated to considering the voices of all members within our community.”

Harley-Davidson Unveils ‘Most Powerful Production Bike Yet,’ but Fans Say It’s a ‘Miss’ Due to Key Feature

HARLEY-Davidson has introduced its most powerful motorcycle ever available for public roads, but a significant portion of the fanbase is expressing dissatisfaction with the unveiling.

The iconic motorcycle manufacturer showcased their 2025 CVO Road Glide RR in a promotional video shared on social media, following its announcement at a press conference held in Austin, Texas.

The new CVO Road Glide RR is designed on Harley’s touring platform and features a 131 cubic-inch engine that delivers an impressive 153 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque.

However, aspiring owners may find it challenging to obtain one, as only 131 units of this model will be produced, and it carries a hefty starting price of $110,000.

This price point marks the highest ever set by the company for one of its motorcycles, which is said to honor its participation in the renowned “King of the Baggers” motorcycle race series.

During the press event, Jason Kehl, Harley’s Product Development Leader, remarked: “A project like this, a motorcycle of this exclusivity, hand-crafted with only 131 units, wouldn’t be viable without the complete backing of the company.

“This is a ‘factory motorcycle.’ Harley Davidson has referred to that term, pertaining to racing, since 1914.”

For those unaware, Mission King of the Baggers features Harley’s heavier bikes – equipped with fairings and saddlebags – competing against their sole American competitor, Indian Motorcycle.

With this latest model, Harley aims to capitalize on the growing popularity of the racing series, although the response from fans has not met the company’s expectations.

In comments on the unveiling video shared on Facebook, many users voiced their confusion regarding Harley’s choice to launch such an expensive motorcycle.

One commenter said: “Yeah, this is just what people want right now in this economy…spending $150,000 on a Harley after taxes.”

Another remarked: “This is an answer to a question no one asked. You already make $30K bikes with technology that can’t compete against Japanese models priced a third less.”

Harley-Davidson riders point to glaring ‘oversight’ by brand after chain’s stock plummets & dealerships close for good

“Instead of addressing that – you roll out this?”

A third user commented: “If this was the surprise you teased for three quarters, you’re going to disappoint a majority of your audience.

“You’ve missed your target, a swing and miss, HD.”

However, not all feedback was negative.

An optimistic user stated: “For someone who desires the absolute best…here’s your motorcycle, and if I could, I certainly would be interested.”

In a similar vein, Indian released its own race replica, the Challenger RR, in 2023, which was intended strictly for track use—but sales were poor.

Only 29 units were produced, initially priced at $92,229, and the Challenger RR is still available at various dealers for less than the original cost.

In recent months, shares of Harley-Davidson have declined, with motorcycle sales witnessing a third consecutive annual drop.

Escalating prices and interest rates have largely deterred potential buyers.

Harley-Davidson closures in 2024

There are over 650 Harley-Davidson dealerships around the United States.

Nevertheless, various locations have closed for numerous reasons throughout 2024, with little explanation provided.

Below is a list of some Harley-Davidson outlets that have shut down this year:

The San Francisco location closed in June after 110 years of operation due to ‘chaos’ caused by new management.

Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, ceased operations in September with no reason specified.

Harley-Davidson’s landmark shop in New York City closed on September 28, with the owner citing economic challenges.

Reiman’s Harley-Davidson dealership in Kewanee, Illinois, shut its doors in October after the ownership transferred the business to the Walter Brothers Harley Davidson dealership in Peoria, Illinois.

Additionally, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, will be temporarily closing for the season from November 2 until April 1, 2024.

Flashback: Donald Trump Comments on Harley-Davidson’s Struggles in the Indian Market due to Trade Tariffs

  • Donald Trump has issued a warning regarding reciprocal tariffs, which would result in the US imposing the same tariff rates as those levied by other countries on American exports.

Flashback: Donald Trump Comments on Harley-Davidson’s Struggles in the Indian Market due to Trade Tariffs
Harley-Davidson currently partners with Hero MotoCorp in India, with the X 440 being their first collaboratively designed model.

US President Donald Trump has advocated for reciprocal tariffs on countries, corresponding to the rates at which they impose tariffs on American goods. During discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump criticized India’s high tariffs on US-manufactured Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Also Read: Discover Harley-Davidson bikes in India

In his second term, Trump has reiterated the notion of reciprocal tariffs, asserting that this aligns with his vision of equitable trade practices. He previously imposed a 25% tariff on specific imports from Canada and Mexico, though that initiative was temporarily paused until the end of February. He has also targeted regions like the European Union, China, and India. “Currently, we are a reciprocal nation… Whatever tariffs India charges us, we will reciprocate, and I believe this is only fair,” he stated. “I recall when Harley Davidson struggled to sell their motorcycles in India due to steep taxes and tariffs, which led them to establish local manufacturing to circumvent these costs. Others might consider similar strategies in their dealings with us.”

While both India and the US maintain significant trade relations, Trump’s tariff threats do not single out any specific country. By promoting domestic production and leveraging his presidential campaign on the promise of creating more American jobs, Trump signals his desire for production capacities to develop or increase in the United States rather than relying heavily on imports.

What happened to Harley-Davidson in India?

Harley-Davidson entered India in 2009, launching its first dealership in 2010. Known as a premium brand in the US, Harley initially imported models such as Sportster, Dyna, VRSC, Softail, and CVO. However, as the years went by, the company began to locally assemble certain models, including the Street 500 and 750 in Bawal, Haryana.

Despite the vast two-wheeler market in India, penetrating the premium segment posed significant challenges. In September 2020, Harley-Davidson announced its exit, citing weak demand and disappointing sales figures. However, it wasn’t a complete exit; the American company partnered with Hero MotoCorp in October 2020, designing a framework for Hero to enable sales and servicing of Harley’s motorcycles. By 2023, their first joint project, the Harley-Davidson X440, launched at a price of 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom).
