Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for 82,100 Motorcycles Due to Crash Risk from Tire Pressure Issues

Harley-Davidson is initiating a recall for more than 82,100 Softail motorcycles due to a defective component that may affect the rear tire, potentially causing a sudden loss of pressure.

The manufacturer disclosed in a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that certain 2018-2019 FLDE, 2018-2021 FLHC, 2018-2024 FLHCS, 2018 and 2023 FLHCS ANV, 2020-2024 FXLRS, 2022-2024 FXLRST, and 2022 FXRST Softail motorcycles may have been equipped with a type of rear shock adjuster mounting tab that is prone to fracturing.

Should the mounting tab break, it may cause the adjuster to come into contact with the rear tire, potentially gouging it and leading to a rapid loss of tire pressure, according to the recall notice.

“A sudden loss of tire pressure heightens the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA stated.

The company plans to notify owners of the potentially affected Softail motorcycles via letter in mid-June.

Owners will be required to have their motorcycle serviced by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer to address the issue as stated in the recall report.

This service will include the installation of “new hardware” that encompasses a new bracket aimed at limiting the movement of the preload adjuster and preventing it from making contact with the rear tire; the repair will be provided at no cost.

Some of the recalled 82,100 Softail motorcycles had been “previously repaired” under another recall and “will need to undergo the new remedy,” as noted by the NHTSA. This previous recall occurred in August 2023 and affected more than 65,200 motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson indicated in the most recent NHTSA recall notification that there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue.

“Other Softail models utilizing a different style of rear shock adjuster are not included in this recall,” the company added in the notice.

Harley-Davidson has a dedicated webpage where motorcycle owners can verify if their bike is part of a recall using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This number is generally found on the steering head or a label affixed to the right front down tube of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

On a global scale, the company announced it shipped nearly 149,000 motorcycles across various models during the year 2024.

Harley-Davidson Considers $1 Billion Sale Amid Leadership Change and Investor Pressure for Significant Overhaul

The renowned motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson is exploring the possibility of selling its financial services division, a move potentially valued at $1 billion, following the announcement of its CEO’s resignation.

Insiders, who requested anonymity, are gauging market interest in the sale of its Financial Services, which comprises regional banks, private equity firms, and private credit entities.

Weak sales growth, declining stock prices, and fierce competition from brands like Honda and BMW have unsettled investors, as reported by Business Times.

While the choice to terminate its financial arm isn’t definitive, the company is actively exploring potential buyer interest.

This development follows the announcement of Harley-Davidson‘s CEO, Jochen Zeitz, planning to step down after a five-year tenure.

On April 10, Harley-Davidson stocks dropped 9.3%, closing at $21.49 in New York, resulting in a market valuation of $2.7 billion.

Last year, the share price nearly halved, plummeting by 48%, a decline likely worsened by Trump’s tariff policies.

Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS) assists dealers in financing their inventory and aids consumers in purchasing motorcycles, including the LiveWire bikes.

This division also collaborates with third parties to offer motorcycle insurance, facilitating entry into the world of two wheels.

Representatives from the Milwaukee-based firm declined to comment on the matter.

In 2023, the boutique manufacturer produced only 1,600 units of their impressive machines, with merely 20 available in the UK.

Recent reports suggest that the escalating trade war and impending tariffs imposed by the European Union on American-made motorcycles, including Harley-Davidson, could compel the storied brand to move production.

A report from Biz Journals indicated that a senior Harley executive recently cautioned Congress about the possibility of a “devastating” 56% tariff on bikes manufactured in America and sold in Europe.

Consequently, they have urged Congress to advocate for equitable trade agreements with the European Union, Canada, and Asian nations.

The EU responded earlier this month, announcing that, in retaliation for the 25% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration on steel and aluminum imports, they would increase tariffs on American-made products, including motorbikes, boats, and bourbon.

Jonathan Root, the company’s CFO and president of commercial, stated that tariffs could rise to a total of 56% on American-made Harleys sold in the EU.

Root told the subcommittee, “My request today is straightforward: fairness.”

“It’s evident that Harley-Davidson is facing discrimination and being targeted politically by the EU and Canada.”

He asserted that these tariffs are unjustified, discriminatory, and politically driven, noting that Harley-Davidson has already absorbed a significant cost from a 2018 tariff, amounting to about $166 million.

He emphasized that the company chose to absorb these costs rather than passing them on to consumers.

Harley-Davidson is experiencing significant changes as Zeitz departs after five years at the helm.

He plans to remain until a successor is appointed.

Dealership owners are expressing joy at the CEO’s retirement as they look forward to a fresh start, reported local Fox affiliate WITI.

“If you were to ask how many Harley dealers are thrilled about a new CEO, the answer is all of them,” declared Jeff Binkert, president of House of Harley-Davidson.

“[Zeitz hasn’t] established a connection with customers and dealers overall, and I believe it’s time for new leadership.”

Binkert attributed the decline in dealer business to Zeitz’s “Hardwire” initiative, which allows online motorcycle purchases.

“The relentless drive to sell products online has really disrupted the dealers,” he lamented.

“If you can order a T-shirt online with free shipping, why would anyone visit the store?”

Binkert noted a “number of cultural shifts” have occurred since Zeitz took charge, but dealers are “looking to the future.”

“I believe it’s going to be an exciting new era,” he stated.

Harley-Davidson CEO Resignation & Tariff Issues: A Critical Moment

Binkert’s thoughts about Zeitz’s cultural changes were supported by board member Jared Dourdeville, who resigned shortly after the CEO did.

In his resignation letter from the 122-year-old organization, Dourdeville criticized Harley-Davidson’s CEO for the company’s poor performance and “cultural decline.”

In his April 1 letter, he expressed serious concerns regarding the company’s long-term direction.

He mentioned the transformations in Harley-Davidson’s culture, transparency, and accountability, as well as management’s inability to prioritize the company.

“These worries have intensified significantly in recent quarters,” Dourdeville wrote.

The board member held Zeitz accountable for Harley-Davidson’s deficiencies, stating these problems “start at the top.”

Below is a list of some Harley-Davidson outlets that have closed this year and the reasons behind their closures:

A San Francisco location shut down in June 2024 after 110 years due to ‘disruption’ caused by new management.

Miracle City Harley-Davidson in Titusville, Florida, closed in September 2024 with no explanation given.

Harley-Davidson’s legacy New York City location closed on September 28, 2024, with the owner citing economic challenges.

Additionally, the dealership in West Bend, Wisconsin, is temporarily closing for the season from November 2 until April 1, 2024.

For 2025, Hideout Harley-Davidson in Missouri announced it would close at the end of March.

“Much of what makes Harley-Davidson unique is the chance to foster community among employees, dealers, customers, and fans worldwide,” wrote Dourdeville.

“Currently, the community that Harley-Davidson aims to cultivate has been severely affected at the corporate level, and the extent of cultural decline has become more evident in recent months.”

Dourdeville concluded his letter expressing his “deep respect” for the company.

The board member mentioned he remains hopeful for a future where employees, shareholders, dealers, and riders can succeed.
